Find Ancestors

Trying to find a marriage of Eliza to a George Smith (1857).

In the 1911 census it says that they were married for 29 years but have not had any success in finding this marriage. They were living in Solihull district at that time.

I have the birth certificate for one of their sons Reuben born in 1890 in Birmingham. George is a house painter/painter in all the censuses.

They may not have married but thought someone with more experience might be able to advise.

I cant see any marriage for her to George. I can see her up to 1881 census and then she must be living with George after that

You have all come up trumps. I think they didn't marry but will get the Smitten/Skillicorn marriage - just to check the signature against the birth certificate and Eliza's birth certificate.

Unless you have your Smitten girls mixed up I wouldnt bother with the marriage certificate in 1886

so Harry was born 1882 which rules out the 1886 marriage to Edwin Skillicorn >>>>>>>>>> :-(

The Smith census is correct as Reuben is the father my living relative.

It does look like Eliza Annie married Edwin Skillicorn.

I have checked the births and in Solihull there are two Eliza one in 1856 and the other in 1860. So would you plump for the 1860?

not according to the 1891 census that Eliza was born c 1856/7

Either births though should be the same parents

i think George has the ages mixed up . according to the 1891 he was 31 so should be 51 in 1911 . he says 54

And Eliza in 1891 was 35 so in 1911 should be 55 he says 51 .

so maybe he put their ages the wrong way round ??

Perhaps. When I apply for the birth I will speak to the genealogist at the Birmingham records office. He is very helpful and may be able help? that is look at the Skillicorn marriage and check the Eliza's age? It will rule one of them out - hopefully!

An update! I believe one of the Elizas should have been Matilda b 1859 so am on right track. Will talk to the registrar tomorrow!
