Hi there,

I made a post about this family recently but couldn't find it. So, this is a new post so not sure that is important.

My ancestor Isaac Pattison (aged 68) and a tinner married Ann Gordon (aged 58) in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire on 28 Feb. 1881. Both parties were widowed.

I am trying to find more about Ann Gordon; she was the daughter of Edward Burnside (Deceased) a potter, and was born in Guisborough, Yorkshire according to the 1881 census.

I trying to find out more about Ann before she married Isaac Pattison in 1881, and also more about her father Edward Burnside as another twist in the tale shows I am distantly related to a branch called BURNSIDE(s).

Also, Isaac is described as the son of George Pattison, a tinner (Deceased) and I am wanting to find a baptism for him. There is nothing on the IGI. Can anyone else spot him? He was born in Scotland.

Thank you,

Peter

Out of sheer curiosity, I did an advanced search on here with keyword Isaac, and author Peter.............18 threads came up.

Could one of those be the one you're looking for?

Peter

Peter Report 16 Dec 2011 19:42

Probably Flick - but all for different aspects of a wider family in there context! There are at least five in my tree, all who had children, so you can see how this develops and causes confusion.

Anyway, thank you all for this help! Much appreciated.

Ivy

Ivy Report 17 Dec 2011 08:12

I wondered whether the granddaughter Annie Gosling shown in 1881 age 8 would be Isaac or Ann's granddaughter. I cannot find Gosling to Pattison marriages (I did not check for alternative spellings, however); there is a possible marriage for Gosling to Gordon in 1868. The spouse is either Mary Warren or Hannah Gordon. The marriage is registered in Stockport, in the June quarter of 1868, so perhaps the Gordon family were on the other side of the Pennines for a while?

Ivy

Ivy Report 17 Dec 2011 09:33

Going back to the 1842 marriage that you have posted, it does seem very likely, since there is this Gordon family with links to Burnside(s) and Guisborough in 1851, and the age of the eldest child fitting with a marriage in 1842:

Name: Alexander Gordon
Age: 24
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Ann Gordon
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Gateshead, Durham, England

Civil parish: Trimdon
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Sub-registration district: Hartlepool

Household schedule number: 1

Household Members:
Alexander Gordon 24 (age 16 when eldest child born? - image says age 26), a tinner
Ann Gordon 25 b Sadberge, Durham (this is near Darlington)
Ann Gordon 8 b Gisbro
Margret Gordon 5 b Auckland
Isabella Gordon 3 b Hull
Dinia Gordon 1 b Darlington (possible match to Hannah in 1881?)
Abraham Burnsides 22 (brother in law)
- so Mr Gordon did travel around a fair amount

Ivy

Ivy Report 17 Dec 2011 10:52

That 1851 entry is a reasonable match to the following family in 1861:

Name: Ann Gordon
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1823
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: Ellock Gordon
Gender: Female
Where born: Sudbury

Civil parish: Durham St Giles
Town: Durham
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Registration district: Durham
Sub-registration district: St Nicholas
ED, institution, or vessel: 11

Household schedule number: 224
Piece: 3741
Folio: 109
Page Number: 46

Household Members:

Ellock Gordon 38 (tinner and brazier)
Ann Gordon 38
Ann Gordon 18
Margaret Gordon 16
Dinah Gordon 10

The transcription from the image is fine, which suggests that the enumerator for this 1861 census was trying to decipher the householder's writing.

- and again in 1871, which fits for a death of Alexander Gordon in 1874 in Sculcoates age 49:

Spouse's Name: Ann Gordon
Gender: Male
