Find Ancestors

I am looking for Emma Angela Edvige Giovanelli who was born in Italy in 1883, I have found her death in Hastings in 1970, and I know she married Christopher James (Cornelius) Moynahan in 1917 but I don't seem to be able to find any other information about her such as when she came over to the UK.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Her father (if known) will be named on her marriage cert

She would have almost certainly arrived by cross-channel ferry, for which no records exist

Thanks, I did see that, but I don't think it's her - she's about 10 yrs too old.

Her fathers name is Serafino and works as a railway engineer - though it doesn't say whether that's the british railway or the italina railway! Emma's occupation on her marraige certificate is classed as "Professor of Literature" and her age is down as 32, also her death record has her down as being 86 when she died - which fits with a birth year around 1884

Elise, how do you know what age is right and what is wrong?!

People lied all the time about their ages on census and marriage records, for whatever reason.

Plus, if you'd seen that record and discounted it you should have said that in your opening post. :-)

Abou 5/6 years, actually, and ages on censuses are not always 100% accurate.

BUT....get the marriage cert for facts.

Did she become a British subject?

If so naturalisation records may exist..........and prove informative

I have the marriage certificate - read above, as i said in my opening message - I don;t know anything else about her- I don;t know when she came over the UK, I don;t know if she was nationalised etc - given what her marriage certificate says the Emma in the 1911 census doesn't seem to fit. but thanks anyway.

If so, then she may certainly be wanting to close the gap in ages ........

The date of birth given when a death is registered is only as reliable as the information supplied by the informant. Have seen a fair few instances where family members, however close, didn't necessarily know the person's true age.

Elise - you never said who the witnesses were, can sometimes yield clues.

Also, the period of time over which any children of the marriage (if any) were born may also give a hint as to her true age.

Catherine, yes that is the couple - on the marriage certificate Emma is 32yrs old where as christopher is 23 - so whilst i am aware that people lied on census and certificates with regards to their age, not only do the ages not match, but neither do their occupations - dressmaker vs professor of literature???????????

Oh, by the way, my very good friend is a professor of music, qualified in St Petersburg (she prefers that name!). When she first came to England she was working as a warehouse assistant until she was able to get posts befitting her status and experience. We all have to pay the bills someway ......

Only posted the marriage to show that it took place in the same district as 1911 census, so maybe worth a second look.
Also found it interesting that she is noted as marrying two people on the same day in the same place, never seen that one before!
