Hi

Can someone find this family for me please:-

Maria CUTTEN nee BURLS/BURLES born c1872 Enfield, Middlesex
Sarah Hilda CUTTEN born 1898 Enfield, Middlesex
Alice Rhoda CUTTEN born 1900 Enfield, Middlesex
George Nathan CUTTEN born 1902 Enfield, Middlesex
Doris Jane CUTTEN born 1904 Enfield, Middlesex
John William CUTTEN born 1905 Enfield, Middlesex

There is no father as I know he left the family in 1905 to remarry.

If they are not on census can anybody find them anywhere else? Apart from the children's birth registrations I cannot find anything for any of them!

Thanks

MarieCeleste

Hi Kim - where were they in 1901 (just to help us get our bearings)

Kim

Kim Report 4 Dec 2011 19:24

Unfortunately I don't know. Someone looked for them for me but they couldn't be found but all the children were born Enfield, Middlesex so my guess would be there.

Alice was born April 1900 at 79 Churchbury Road, Enfield.
George born unknown Enfield.
Doris was born July 1904 at 3 Chaseside Gardens or Terrace, Enfield.
John was born September 1905 at 3 Chaseside Gardens or Terrace, Enfield.

If any of that helps.

Alice's birth address was handy for 1901:

BURLES, Jane Head Widow F 56 1845 Enfield Middlesex
BURLES, Maria Daughter Single F 27 1874 Laundress Washer Enfield Middlesex
BURLES, Sarah Daughter Single F 20 1881 Charwoman Enfield Middlesex

Registration District: Edmonton
Civil Parish: Enfield Municipal

Address: 79, Churchbury Road, Enfield County: Middlesex

** BUT, it says Maria is single and no mention of Alice?

Is this the marriage you had for them?

Well that is the right Maria with her mother and sister but where are her husband and daughter's Sarah & Alice how strange.

Maria married in 1895 also in Enfield, Middlesex.

Kim

Kim Report 4 Dec 2011 19:38

Yes that is their marriage.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Dec 2011 19:39

Benjamin is saying he's married in 1901, although Maria seems to be denying all knowledge!

That is the right Benjamin but again both the daughters are missing.

The only other info I know is that Benjamin ran away in 1905 with an Emily Bookless nee Emery and had two more children another daughter named Doris Mary born Sept 1905 and a son named Thomas Benjamin 1907 -1907. These were born in Birmingham.

Those children are all Sarah & Joseph William's they were recorded as niece's & nephews as all born before parents marriage and given mothers maiden name. Presumably to avoid disgrace.

Well, I'm stumped for now. Quite possibly MAria was living with someone and they were registered under his name.

Will keep digging.

Kim

Kim Report 4 Dec 2011 20:05

Thank you so much. I did wonder that as I can't find any records for any of them under that name.

Kim

Kim Report 4 Dec 2011 22:59

I have been going through the 1911 census and under Summary Books using just first names I have found:-

Alice Rhoda KEEN
Residing Kent, England

Can someone see who else is with her please, it is a real long shot but worth a look.

Thanks

MarieCeleste

Yes, it was a long shot!

Kim

Kim Report 4 Dec 2011 23:28

Thanks again, it was the only one that had both names but our right they have to be somewhere.

That's it I give up for this evening, off to bed now.

Was having a poke around and saw this 1891:

BELL, Mason Head Married M 57 1834 Gardener Enfield Middlesex
BELL, Jane Wife Married F 50 1841 Enfield Middlesex
BELL, Florrie Daughter Single F 18 1873 Enfield Middlesex
BELL, Sarah Daughter Single F 8 1883 Enfield Middlesex
WARREN, James Lodger Single M 56 1835 Gardener Enfield Middlesex
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Registration District: Edmonton
Civil Parish: Enfield

Address: 13, Churchbury Road, Enfield County: Middlesex

On the Ancestry version this note has been added to the record for Florrie Bell:
"Maria Burles rather than Florrie Bell
This is a transciption error. Maria was the sister of my great grandmother for whom I have the certificates Submitted by Kimxxxxxxx on 08/10/2007"

Definitely looks like the enumerator misheard.

Kim

Kim Report 5 Dec 2011 15:00

The head's name should of read Nathan and the James Warren confirms it as definitely being them as Jane's maiden name was WARREN and James was her brother.

Interesting as to why she was named Florrie but then Mason should have been Nathan and Bell should have been Burles. I think that enumerator must have been hard of hearing.

I'm also struggling to find Benjamin Cutten in 1911, on the remote off chance that Maria's children were with him
