My great uncle, Joseph Francis Finnie, was born at Scissett, near Huddersfield, in 1887. But he seems to have disappeared from the public record in 1911, when that year's census described him as a 24 year old gardener working at Mentmore Towers, in Buckinghamshire. There is a possibility that he went to the United States or Canada, and may have married out there. A member of the Finnie family ran the Four Provinces bar in Washington. He could be Joseph or related to Joseph. Joseph's parents were Andrew and Margaret Finnie, both from Sligo though they married in England and lived at Scissett and Skelmanthorpe. Joseph Francis Finnie's siblings included my grandfather, Bernard Joseph Finnie, born in 1890 at Nortonthorpe, Scissett, Yorkshire. I would be very grateful if anyone can find out what happened to Joseph Francis Finnie. Did he emigrate to the US? Did he marry? And when and where did he die?
Best wishes
Nick Bannister
PS: I find it strange that two boys in the same family, born within 4 years of each other, both shared the Christian name Joseph, albeit one of them having it as their second Christian name!

Nicholas

the sharing of names is not that unusual

However ...... was this family Catholic?

Because Catholic children were given a seond name by the parish Priest when they went through confirmation at around 11 or 12

and I noticed that Bernard was Bernard in 1891, and Bernard Joseph in 1901.

Joseph was plain Joseph in 1891, and Joseph Francis in 1901

Its not unusual to name two children the same It happened in my maternal grans family . two boys born four years apart both named James. one was James Herbert and the other James Joseph . Both survived in to adulthood and each was known by their second name.

Nick
A couple of things come to mind. He would be expected to join up in 1914 when he would be about 28, have you checked out the military side. Sorry I can't help with that one although there will be people who can. Also I noticed that his family remained in Huddersfield. Depending on the wording of the obituaries of his parents, Margaret who died in 1922 aged 70 and Andrew who died, probably with the wrong age, at 91 in Dec 1941 it may well mention the names of their children. This information may be in the Huddersfield Examiner. If a 'child' is abroad it is often mentioned or if he died it would be entered as the 'late' which would partly answer your enquiry.-jl

Janet

well, you did say that you had contact with Nick :-D

............. and the rest of us are none the wiser as to whether anything Nick said in his pm would be helpful to other helpers

I will add here that Nick replied to me, saying that the family was Catholic, in response to my suggestion that the second forenames might be from confirmation. So that removes that query from the opening post.

As I presume that you did not contact Nick again, I will myself contact him with the suggestions from Flick (and earlier Shirley)

Sylvia, just to confirm I have not contacted Nick via a p.m. He answered me. I have done all my communicating via this board.
If Nick has read my message then it follows that he has read Shirley's advice not to post his email on these boards. I am not here to police this board on behalf of other people. We all try to help in our own way and being told, however 'politely' what to do, is a no no.-jl

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am still slightly baffled by some of the abbreviations. What is a "PM"? How do I reply to/open it? I am still puzzled about how to remove my email address from an earlier post. My heart is willing but my technical mind is confused!
I apologise for my lack of response but for the last week our family has been in a state of chaos as we've been helping our younger daughter to see film of/prepare press conference address for/ delivering artwork to National Army Museum/ unveiling of portrait of lead horse, etc etc in connection with Steven Spielberg's film of Michael Murpurgo's book "War Horse". She was the film's equine artistic adviser and head of the equine hair and make up department. But now to serious matters....this email address problem!
