Still trying to find Patrick lurking in the 1881. He must have been in Glasgow or surrounding area before he married Margaret - unless it was a real whirlwind romance!

rootgatherer Report 22 Nov 2011 20:56

This may be Margaret before they married? Not that it helps really - just looking for a possible area that Patrick may be living in. Of course at that time there were loads of Irish in the Gorbals area (my own lot included!)

Roots you are a great researcher :-)
can you point me the way to find James and Patrick in the early Irish records

Ian

Ian Report 22 Nov 2011 21:14

Roots a lot of the Marriages for this family took place in the St John's Chaple, Portugal Road, Glasgow

rootgatherer Report 22 Nov 2011 21:16

Alas Ian there are no early Irish census! They were destroyed. The only ones currently available are the 1901 and 1911.

I can't find Patrick in 1881 - most annoying.

I am kind of drawn (though maybe clutching at straws here) to this family/

1861

Name: James Meehan

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1821
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Mary Meehan

Registration district: Hutchesontown
Civil parish: Glasgow Gorbals
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Third Back Land
Occupation: Labourer
ED: 93
Household schedule number: 49
Line: 21
Roll: CSSCT1861_113
Household Members: Name Age

I am wondering if his mother died when he was young, he just thought that his older sister was named for her Mum?

If you are handy for the Mitchell library you could search the Poor Relief records (thinking that he may have been orphaned). Those records are a wonderful source of information about our Irish ancestors if they claimed poor relief.

I'll try to follow that family above on census records.

Yes they would marry there as that would be their local church - that or St. Francis.

rootgatherer Report 22 Nov 2011 21:22

If you don't have the census, do you want me to see if I can find Margaret with her parents please? If so give me their names from the marriage certificate.
