Adelaide/Alice's birth:

Friday 21 December 1894
STONER.-On 19th December, at Tullamore House, Cameron-street, Launceston, the wife of Henry Stoner-of a daughter.

John's birth:

Saturday 30 September 1893
STONER.-On 29th September, at 209 St. John-street, Launceston, the wife of Henry Stoner, of a son.

Here is the marriage notice giving the exact date:

Launceston Examiner, Tuesday 15 November 1892
STONER-THOMPSON.-On 2nd November, at Melbourne, by Rev. O. Bagley, H. Stoner, of Launceston, to Alice Thompson, of Launceston.

There are some advertisements in the Launceston Examiner for H. Stoner, Wholesale and Retail Tobacconist, 147 Charles Street in 1896. In 1895 he was at 116 Brisbane Street, and also had a Melbourne address at Flemington racecourse.

In December 1897, it stated he was leaving for England the following month and was keen to sell his business "the most popular and centrally located tobacconist and hairdressing saloon in Tasmania", connected to a first class billiard saloon!

Seems he was a keen and talented billards player, and also ran a book out of his shop, so I guess he liked the horses too! (i.e. he was a bookie, or bookmaker).

Ah by September 1898 he was back in Launceston after his trip to England, mentioned as "the well-known turf agent".

See NLA Trove newspaper site.

Final update for information in case of interest.

I now have a marriage for Henry Edward STONER to Alice THOMPSON in Victoria 1892, and Tasmanian births
- John Henry Stoner b 1893 (son of Alice Thompson and Henry Stoner)
- Adelaide Caroline Stoner born 1894 (daughter of Alice Thompson and Henry Stoner)
- Marjorie Julia Stoner b 1900 (daughter of Alice ? and Henry Edward Stoner)

Also Tasmanian burial of a John Henry Stoner in 1971 born 1893 so maybe he returned.

Slight problem with Adelaide Caroline being subsequently known as Alice. No other evidence that both existed.

Thanks again, Alan

Found a couple of births in Launceston, son in 1894, daughter in 1895, to a Henry Stoner.

Also some leads - a couple of Edmonton marriages, Alice and Marjorie J, and a possible marriage for a John L but in Northampton - can't find an alternative groom at present and his age at death is consistent.

Many thanks for all of the help.

Thanks. My 1911 research is limited to the free portion. Without birth places I couldn't pin any of them down as Stoners or find them in other censuses.

It's the right registration district and explains his absence. Will pursue and post any conclusions.

Thanks, Alan

looks like he went abroad at some time and married there as his children were born in Tasmania

Shirley - it's more of a one-name study so while certificates are useful I'm afraid they're rarely an option.

I've been doing Ancestry searches. LDS 1881doesn't offer any Kent matches as STONER with any of his forenames 1863+-5.

Apologies - I should have mentioned all of that.

It would probably help if you got his birth cert to see who his parents were . makes it easier to search for the right family then on the census's

Have you checked the LDS version of the 1881?

It allows for variations.........

Have you searched using either - or both- of his forenames other than Edward?
