Colin Bernard Thorley was born in july 1890 , he appears on the 1891 census , with his parents and grandmother eliza plant ,but then I can't find him on the 1901 census.
His father was Elijah Thorley born fenton 1865, he was a confectioner and his mother jane nee plant b 1870 caverswall.
all are missing from the 1901 census
on the 1911 census colin could be with his father but I don't know why jane doesn't seem to be with them.
On the 1911 it seems that the transcript has Colen thorley with father Elizah.
thank you inadvance
could someone kindly check to ss if they have better luck than me

that looks like the right one for 1901.does it say if the 3 lower people on the census have any relationship to the head of the family?

could you find Jane in 1911
thanks

Colin's army pension papers are on Ancestry he states that an allowance goes to his mother Jane Thorley at 60 Stafford Street Longton Staffs and that she is wholly or partly dependant on him

1917

On the 1901 Jones, Whitfield & Brain were servants

scarey Report 14 Nov 2011 19:17

that would suggest that elijah is dead by 1917 yet I couldn't see an entry that matched in the deaths
there is an elijah thorley dying 1914 but it says 40 years old- that is 9 years out.
Had wanted to know more about Jane as she was always refered to as Aunt Jane Thorley. Is she with colin on the 1911 census?

Actually that make a lot of sense.
Mad Aunt Jane Thorley!!!!!!!!!!!

wonder who the second child was. I guess there is no way of finding out
any ideas?

just realise I stated janes bith as 1870 it was 1860 sorry

scarey

scarey Report 14 Nov 2011 19:24

what was janes profession in 1901. I would guess with 3 servants she wouldn't have been a transferer, but her dwelling on the 1911 census would fit

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 14 Nov 2011 19:25

Scarey - if you go onto FreeBMD you can search for Thorley births in the right area and timescale, then search for deaths that may correspond (that's all we would do and it's much more satisfying finding these things for yourself)

thats what I'm attempting right now

Thank you for the info found it solves a puzzle that I've had for some time

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 14 Nov 2011 19:29

Just because someone had servants doesn't mean they were wealthy! Often it was people who lodged with them in return for helping out a bit.

There's no occupation on the 1901. In the 1911 it has Pottery as the industry.

scarey Report 14 Nov 2011 19:33

could be an eliza ellen- but there are so many possiblities
I guess this is as far as we can go with this one
thank you

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 14 Nov 2011 19:36

Sorry, where does Eliza Ellen come into this?

scarey

scarey Report 14 Nov 2011 19:40

No, far from it I didn't expect it to mean wealthy.

I expected that because they had a confectioners shop ,jane would be employed in the shop- which is what the other three probably were.

I have elijah dying in 1924. What year were the army pension papers- there seems to be 1917 written in the posting about it. If it is 1917 jane might only be partly dependant on colin.

He enlisted 1917 (was 5'6" and had flat feet, fair hair and a hairy mole on his back) looks like he'd been exempted up until then because of his occupation. He was a signalman and it doesn't look like he was in any theatre of war?

The form Quoy referred to is a standard form enabling deductions to be made from a soldier's pay to anyone who is totally or partly dependent on them - a bit like sending board money back home. It does name his mother Jane at 60 Stafford Road - it also gives his next of kin as his father Elijah at the same address.
