that looks like the right one for 1901.does it say if the 3 lower people on the census have any relationship to the head of the family? |

Colin's army pension papers are on Ancestry he states that an allowance goes to his mother Jane Thorley at 60 Stafford Street Longton Staffs and that she is wholly or partly dependant on him |

that would suggest that elijah is dead by 1917 yet I couldn't see an entry that matched in the deaths |

what was janes profession in 1901. I would guess with 3 servants she wouldn't have been a transferer, but her dwelling on the 1911 census would fit |

Scarey - if you go onto FreeBMD you can search for Thorley births in the right area and timescale, then search for deaths that may correspond (that's all we would do and it's much more satisfying finding these things for yourself) |

Just because someone had servants doesn't mean they were wealthy! Often it was people who lodged with them in return for helping out a bit. |

He enlisted 1917 (was 5'6" and had flat feet, fair hair and a hairy mole on his back) looks like he'd been exempted up until then because of his occupation. He was a signalman and it doesn't look like he was in any theatre of war? |
