Hi there,
Sorry for causing confusion! Yes, I am said 1901 when I meant 1911!
I am looking to find more about this Clara Smith (nee BAGE), who is shown in 1901 and 1911 here:
1901 Census
Name: Clara Smith Age: 21 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880 Relation: Wife Spouse's Name: John Smith Gender: Female Where born: Middlesbro, Yorkshire, England
Civil parish: Ormesby Ecclesiastical parish: North Ormesby Holy Trinity Town: North Ormesby County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England
Registration district: Middlesbrough Sub-registration district: Ormesby
John Smith 27 b.ca 1874, Nth Ormesby, Yorkshire, Coal Hawker Clara Smith 21
Address:- 46 Pierson Street
WOOD, Henry L Head Married M 21 1890 Steel Worker Yorks Middlesbrough WOOD, Jane Wife Married 2 years F 24 1887 Yorks Middlesbrough WOOD, Elsie Sister Single F 18 1893 Servant General Yorks Middlesbrough WOOD, Annie L Mother Widow F 59 1852 Yorks Stainton WOOD, Elsie M Daughter F 1 1910 Yorks Middlesbrough SMITH, Clara Sister Married 12 years F 30 1881 Barmaid Hotel Yorks Middlesbrough --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Registration District: Middlesbrough Sub District: Middlesbrough West Enumeration District: 31 Parish: Middlesbrough
Address: 16 Derwent Street Middlesbrough County: Yorkshire (North riding)
I was looking for a death to see if I could see an obituary for children's names etc.
However, the common name is proving difficult. If there are no deaths, maybe she did remarry?!
Thank you again! What is best to do here in finding our more about Clara after 1911?

If no obvious death is showing, possibly her husband died and she married someone else.

I think the 1915 death isn't right:
Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page Deaths Jun 1915 Smith Clara 1 Middlesbro 9d 741
.. and she was still alive in 1911.
Peter, what exactly are you trying to find?

I think 1901 in opening post was a typo and should have been 1911:
WOOD, Henry L Head Married M 21 1890 Steel Worker Yorks Middlesbrough WOOD, Jane Wife Married 2 years F 24 1887 Yorks Middlesbrough WOOD, Elsie Sister Single F 18 1893 Servant General Yorks Middlesbrough WOOD, Annie L Mother Widow F 59 1852 Yorks Stainton WOOD, Elsie M Daughter F 1 1910 Yorks Middlesbrough SMITH, Clara Sister Married 12 years F 30 1881 Barmaid Hotel Yorks Middlesbrough -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Registration District: Middlesbrough Sub District: Middlesbrough West Enumeration District: 31 Parish: Middlesbrough Address: 16 Derwent Street Middlesbrough County: Yorkshire (North riding)

Tees Valley Indexes have two deaths for Clara Smith between 1901 - 1921:
year of death 1910: ref M-M-1-0-166
year of death 1915: ref M-M-14-0-443
There's also a Clara D Smith in Guisborough (just along the road) but as you don't mention a middle name I'm assuming this not her
You may need to get both death certs to establish which (if either) is your Clara but you can ask questions of registrar before ordering certificate

Sylvia, the mother's maiden name IS on English birth certificates before 1911 (I'm looking at some now!), it's just on the registration that it doesn't show!

Peter, you say "(can't see her in 1901). In 1901 she is living with her brother Harry (Henry) Wood, his wife Jane, their daughter Elsie, and her mother Annie Langburn Wood.
So, do you mean to say that you can't see her in 1901 or some other year?

There you go Margee - 'broken' families are not just a 21st Century phenomena. Also, I suspect Annie was a bigamist but that is another story. I already have a lot of on her and the families but I am looking into Clara.
