Can someone see if they can find a probate record for john Featherstone of Wiveliscombe Somerset.

This might be a silly question but are Probate records the same as wills?

Probate records only tell you to whom probate was granted. i.e. the executor. You have to then order the will to find out who inherited.

About what year?
Do you have any idea when he was born?

The will I found had a date on it of 10/10/1883 But I am not sure when he was born.
He was born in Wivelsicombe somerset.

Oh! So we've got the wrong person? Wish you'd given us a date at the beginning.

There isn't one who matches date and place. There's one who died 1884, Selby, Yorkshire.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I am going to have to do a bit more research before going down the line of looking at wills and probate.

I have just had a look at the parish records for Wiveliscombe and John Featherstone married a Sarah King in 1815 so perhaps the probate record you have found for me is his.

If you have the will, what is it you're asking for?

Er, he couldn't have died 1866 and written a will 1883.

Sorry I couldnt give you more information. It hasnt been wasted MY family has links to the King family aswell so there is probably a connection there. All I have to do is find it.

Jane, it's much better to work backwards from what you know definitely. Is this John Featherstone a direct ancestor. If so, from which child do you descend?

I do not have the will. I was just trying to go down a different route to gather information and I am now beginning to wish I had never started it.

John Featherston married Mary Chorley in Wiveliscombe in 1786 and he was a clothier. In Wiveliscombe it seems that family members tended to stick to the family trade so I was hedging my bets that this John Featherstone was linked to my John featherstone as they were both clothiers in Wiveliscombe.

I will make a note of the census information you have kindly given me and see if I can find out if there is a conection between them.

The one with John and sarah is obviously the one belonging to the marriage I found. There is that King connection there as well. I will see if i can find out who her parents are and see if that helps me.
