A tree here says that their first child John was born 1846, then Thomas 1847, Sarah 1848, another Thomas 1851 etc. |

Rather a lot of names unfortunately! But you might be right. I can only suggest looking for all possible spouses on census and see what turns up. |

The only other thing (apart from getting the marriage cert!) is to look for Ismay/Hannah marriages. I gave this a try at the start but couldn't find them. |

thank you all so much for all of your help, information and hard work. I was checking Hannah and there was a Hannah who was married to someone else but I don't know how to make sure, any suggestions? |

I think journeyman comes from the French for day "journee" as he would have been employed by the day ... |

just for interest Margaret a journeyman is not usually a travelling salesman. It is usually that the person concerned has completed his apprenticeship in his trade but has not reached the status of master. He would either be working for a master or on his own but would not be allowed to employ anyone (he may have travelled about to find jobs but not necessarily). |

It's a possible reason Margaret. Some people just never bothered. |

Do you think that because when Daniel was younger he was a journeyman (travelling salesman) that they did not get married? |

Jan - I noticed that too. I'm guessing that they'd assumed that given the birth of the first child. |

Someone on Ancestry has put marriage 1849, but no supporting evidence so I assume they had no luck either! |

If they married it was most likely between 1841 and 51: |

I have searched genes and got lot of info but I cannot find any marriage for Hannah and Daniel I know he died in 1890, also I cannot find any census records for either of them from 1841 to 1861 can any one think of any reason why this might be? |
