James and Anne Suttie, living in Fife, Scotland. Does anyone have access to the Scottish Census for 1841. James Suttie married Anne Buist in the Parish of Auchtermuchty on 14th December 1839. The copy of the entry I have shows only their names and the marriage date. No ages or names of parents are given. They had a son, Thomas Suttie, in 1844, who married Mary Tod in 1873. Don't have details of any other children prior to Thomas' birth. Your help has proved invaluable in the past. I hope I'm lucky this time. Thank you. Sandra

Thank you to all of you for this wealth of information. Sorry not to have replied sooner, but had to close down early last evening. The line I am following is Thomas, son of James and Anne, who married Mary Tod in 1873 and, some time after that (date unknown) emigrated to South Africa with their son James. I stumbled across an email about James Suttie on the South African Immigration Archives site - didn't even know about the Scottish connection until then. Once again, my thanks to all of you for your enthusiasm and help. Sandra

Thanks so much Ginny. That's cleared up one mystery. I couldn't find a wife for James Tod Suttie and this looks like her. He is buried (we think) in Grahamstown Cemetery, South Africa having died in 1925 even though I couldn't find a record of his death . The date of death I picked up from an email connected to the South African Immigration Archives website, which also gave his mother's death. Why I wonder would he be making the trip back to the UK only 4 years before he died, and what happened to Evelyn? You could write a book on the mysteries and conjectures of tracing ancestors couldn't you. This branch of the family is just a filler, as I've hit the proverbial brick wall tracing my great grandfather's birth place. With a name like Theophilus Todd you would think it would be easy wouldn't you but even the professionals can't find where he was born. I know everything else there is to know about him, and I did think at one time he may have had a Scottish connection but India is where he grew up, married, had children and died. You haven't come across him have you?! Once again, many thanks for the passenger list - another tick in the box!!

Hi Ginny, Thanks for the extras on James and his wife. They certainly were to and fro a lot. It must have been like catching a bus for them!! As for Theo - where do I start. He was born 21st Sept 1838 (place of birth unknown - that's the mystery), father's names James Tod, although without Theo's place of birth I can't pin down James. Theo married Violet Rathbourne in Bangalore in 1860 and they had 11 children - one of whom was my nan, May Beatrice Todd - between 1861 and 1883. Violet died in Rangoon in 1886 (worn out probably!!) and Theo went on to marry twice more to Victoria Knox in 1892 and Muriel Bernadette Walsh in 1912. Victoria died in 1910 so he didn't hang around but he was 53 against Victoria's 25! When he married Muriel he was 73, she was 23!! Something not quite 'savoury' about that!! Theo died at the age of 83 and is buried in Bangalore. Most of the children, with the exception of my nan, stayed out in India and died there. Anthony Adolph did some research for me to try and find his place of birth but no luck. I've tried General Registrars in England,Wales and Scotland and the overseas section for India. Again drawn a blank. His career was, initially as an Apothecary in the Indian Army, later Hon Lt. Surgeon, which, accordingly to the British Library, would indicate he was of mixed parentage, probably his mother - either Indian or Indo/Portuguese. I've got documents from the India Office and Commonwealth Office (long ago of course) but none of them mention his place of birth. The reason I started researching other branches was to distract me from the blood I'm losing banging my head against this particular brick wall! I dont have access to other sites apart from GR and Familysearch.org, but I would imagine Anthony Adoplh would have most of them covered. If you can throw any light on Theo's birthplace it would be magical. Thanks for the help on Evelyn, by the way. My cousin, Tod Suttie (yes, they recycle names in my family!) says a very dim light is glowing in his memory bank. She was his grandmother but both she and James Tod Suttie died before Tod was born and his father, Neville, was a closed book when it came to his family. Skeletons rattling do you think?

You can search 1841-1851 Fife at: http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
1841 is missing 14 of 61 parishes (incl Auchtermuchty). 1851 is actively being transcribed - 54 packets out of 87 spread over the 61 parishes are complete (incl Auchtermuchty). Thet're completing abt half a dozen packets per month.
There's an 1890s Fife map showing parishes at: http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/
