Thank you to everyone who gave me further answers. Annoyingly I was in Bishop's Stortford this morning! But I will have plenty to look at next time.

Can someone who looked them up on 1911 census tell me if it was Warwick house near dunmow - I just googled it and see there was indeed a very grand house there in those days which burned down and is now a garden open to the public called the gardens at easton lodge, I don't think they could have really lived there though it looks far too grand !

Hi Cath
Yes I googled Warwick house as they were living there in 1881 - it certainly did look right out of my lots means - but then I was not sure it wasnt a bit too grand - I wonder if as a Gardener John Prior lived with his family in part of it ....But then it did say he was retired so maybe not.

Thank you for that though Kath - they must have passed that money down the line!

I did wonder if a patient had left her money - some of her sons went to Canada and one died in a lift accident but I doubt there was any compensation in 1865 - the inquest found no one at fault . Seems a shame to have all that money at the end of her life her family needed it 30 years earlier! Typical!

Thank you all so much
I wonder how I get a copy of the will? Can anyone help? I did not realise that was not where the money went. She did have several sons alive but only one daughter - but what I would really like to know is where she got the money from. I presume it was an inheritance but cant link to any wealthy families although her own birth family the Wormans were farmers but I would think their money was passed to children unless one of them had no children.

Thanks again,
Alice

Gee Report 25 Sep 2011 17:14

The 1881 shows her as being a former nurse. Maybe she was left the money by a patient!

Do you have the name of the property she was stayng in in Warwick Road. It looks a fairly prosperous area in 1901

jax

jax Report 25 Sep 2011 17:10

More than likely spread out amongst the children? although she did live with her daughter for about 20 years maybe she deserved it :-D

Warwick Road and Dunmow Road are right next to each other so this seems as if it could be the right person.
