I love an intriguing story Kim. I wonder if Mrs Iremonger's name was Ann? A possible will perhaps ?

Hi Mark

The wedding of John Turner and Ann Ironmonger took place on 22 Dec 1846 in St Mary's, Lowgate, Hull. John Turner was described as a bachelor of full age, a brickmaker, son of John, also a brickmaker. Ann Ironmonger was a spinster, a minor and the daughter of Joseph, a labourer. Both sigened with an "x". Both gave the address of 11 Pall Mall Court. Witnesses were Rachel and Elizabeth Smith.

The marriage was conducted by the Rev. John Scott...there were three John Scotts, father, son and grandson who were incumbents at St Mary's over many years. Wetherspoon's have named a boozer over the road "The Three John Scotts" in their honour (i'm sure they would have been delighted!).

If Ann was a minor, it may suggest that this was indeed one of those runaway marriages....
Best wishes

Like you, Mary, I'd be rather suspicious about a link to 1480 but the Ironmonger-Lakin information is at least checkable via registers and census returns :-)

Best wishes
