Margaret Mary Walsh was born in City of Cork 1889 and married my grandfather in Wales in 1910. I have found them there in the 1911 cencus. I hoped to find evidence of her in the Passenger Lists of sailings from Cork around 1908 but every entry I have seen so far has an American destination. Thousands of people travelled from Cork to Swansea in the early 1900s but where is the evidence to be found in Passenger Lists? I would appreciate any help on this

welcome to the boards - it is highly unlikely there would be any records for such a crossing - usually it is only the longer sea crossings for which there are records - e.g. USA, Canada and Australia - never seen one from Ireland to the UK mainland

can I ask why you would be interested in the passenger list?

Gee

Gee Report 18 Sep 2011 20:30

Ireland was part of the UK back then so there were no shipping records

Thank you for your reply, Ann and Ginny. Ann, I hoped that there might be details on the record of an address for my grandmother in Cork. I have looked for her on the 1901 cencus there but as I do not know her parent's names it is difficult. On the 1911 cencus for Wales she is in Methyr Tydfil with her husband, my grandfather, and her 16 year old brother, Michael. I wondered if they had travelled across together. I am trying to find any fact that will place her in Cork. I know she only made the crossing once as she never went back to Cork.

If you obtain your grandparents' marriage certificate, then you will know the name of her father and from that will be able to search for her in the 1901 Irish census :-)

As you know her brother's name, then you could search for him in the Irish 1901 census: (free) http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Edited - having searched for her in 1901, she could be there, with her age slightly different, with a brother Michael.
Please obtain the marriage certificate, then you could be more certain.

Irish certs have both parents and the witnesses/referees

Joy

Joy Report 18 Sep 2011 21:10

Ginny, on the marriage certificates for my ancestors, the fathers' names are given, plus witnesses.

I have found a record of John Daniel Jones marrying in Swansea, 1910. It seems that this is likely he so I will purchase a copy. On the record entry it states 'spouse's surname only available after 1912'. It will certainly be there on the certificate?
Joy, I have searched the 1901 cencus for Cork but I have found nothing certain, yet. There are lots of Walsh on there, without a parent's name or an address, it is a headache!

edjones Report 18 Sep 2011 21:16

Forgot to mention that a search on the Swansea records for 1910 fails to find Margaret Mary Walsh.

Joy

Joy Report 18 Sep 2011 21:20

I just put in the search Margaret Walsh born Cork.

You found them in 1911 - did it state they had been married one year?

edjones

edjones Report 18 Sep 2011 21:24

Found one! Margaret Walsh- 1910, same quarter Apr-May-Jun but a different page in the record; 1497, to John Daniel's 1429. Does this have any significance?

edjones

edjones Report 18 Sep 2011 21:25

Yes, Joy, it did.

Joy

Joy Report 18 Sep 2011 21:58

Sorry, I had to leave the computer for a while.

Okay then. Is your grandfather's full name definitely John Daniel Jones?

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 18 Sep 2011 21:59

Just checking I am looking at the right family - in 1911 they are at 87 Mount Pleasant, Merthyr Vale, Glamorganshire, they have a six-month-old son and your grandmother's first name is Madge?

I shall look, Roy, but the wife and brother-in-law Michael in 1911 are both under "where born" "City of Cork Resident".

There are times when I am so glad that currently we subscribe to both find my past and to ancestry :) (the surname Farnssey I could not find in FMP).
- yes, Glam Ireland; I think that the Ireland is a mistake there.

-------------------------------------

Is the name Margaret Mary Walsh from the birth certificate of their son?

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 18 Sep 2011 22:55

Not sure if the Ireland is a mistake as the above Mary ann Farnssey on the 1901 is down as born Abersychan Monmouthshire, Wales
