hi all
does anyone visit the bradford archives who is willing to do a look up for me or know of a site i could use.
I am trying to trace my great grandfathers parents. he was william gath born 1863 in bradford, his father is named on his birth cert as henry gath and his mother mary cantrell.
i have found a marriage for henry to mary but her name is down as catwell..I cannot find any census records for henry but have mary in 1861 and 1871 with her children william and alice born 1866. she also had another child susannah 1i 1873 but states she is a widow in 1871 census. the adress's for her are 23 fitzgerald street and wilfried street. doea anyone know what area that is and what the local church would be??
all information gladly received as seem to have hit yet another brick wall
thanks :-D

hi all
i have looked at the 1851 and 1861 census and could be the one
and the bapts with abram looks good and the death all seem to tie in together. i wish I could find mary after1891 she was with susannah still at wilfried street but nothing after that. more important to me is who her parents were as after looking further there seems to be 2 mary,s one 1839 and one 1840 but niot one for 1843 which would be about the right age. and also her place of birth (ireland or bradford). I will have to yet again get the marriage cert, I seem to have to get 2 or 3 every generation I go back!! costing a fortune .
but thanks for all your help it at least confirms some of the threads I have. is there a site for bradford do you know of, . just for information sake there is a fantastic site for sheffield (sheffield indexers and its FREEEE)
many thanks.
BTW is there a board on here where people can share certificates that they have and other people could use or find helpful?? :-)

Julie,

You asked about websites...the best for all of West Yorks at present is Ancestry. If you live near one of the Mormon Church's Family History Centres, they seem to all have it on a free to use basis, some public libraries and family history societies also have it. Ancestry usually offer a free trial, so you could try it out and see if it's for you, just if you decide it isn't, don't forget to cancel before the end of the trial.

Best wishes

That's interesting Kim ,I wonder if the late baptisms were done in order to qualify for parish relief or schooling ?

Kim

Kim Report 21 Aug 2011 11:31

Could well be that, Lindsey, or maybe there was an outbreak of some infectious disease, so she decided to get it done in case they died.

I've not been able to find the Gath marriages but they could be mistranscribed: Goth, Guth, Gatt, Gott etc

Best wishes

Kim

It is common for people born in Ireland to hide the fact, and give their place of birth as the town in which they landed when they crossed over.

You commonly find them admitting to being Irish when they have been here for about 20 years and are more relaxed about it.,

My Kellys kept changing their minds between Co Down and Manchester. It doesn't help!
