Fennety Report 3 Aug 2011 15:45

I'm searching about the parents of my grandfather James Finnerty who was birth on october seventeen 1884 probably in Buckley, Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
In 1893 he was at Patricroft Home as an orphan. The same year he was take in charge by the Salford Protection and Rescue Society to emigrate to Canada. He embarked at Liverpool on the steamer Circassian on May eleventh 1893.
On his birth act his father name was James and mother was Mary O'Goffren but I never find anything else on that name. I suppose it may be O'Godfrey or something like that.
Here in Canada his name was Fennety.

Quote "James Finnerty who was birth on october seventeen 1884 probably in Buckley, Rochdale,

On his birth act his father name was James ..............."

If you have his birth registration, surely it tells you where he was born ???

Can't see a birth in 1884 on freebmd
or a marriage for the parents.

Could this all have happened in Ireland ?

The James in the 1881 census was 10 weeks old. which wouldn't equate to an October birth

Are you sure he was born 1884 ?
Where did you get his DOB from please ?

Is the information of your grandfathers birth on a birth Certificate? If you have the birth certificated registered in Rochdale registration district then that is where he would of been born.

Here in UK you register the birth in the registration district you were born.

NicolaDunbyNocula

NicolaDunbyNocula Report 3 Aug 2011 16:58

Just to add when the birth is registered isn't when you are born you have a time limit on when you have to register the birth it is an offence (and was then) if you either didn't register the birth or if you registered birth late. I am not sure what the time limit would of been then, but now I think it is about 2 to 3 months.

A child born Oct could I suppose, be registered in January the following year, thus coming under the March Quarter.

However, as the poster has detailed the parents, it points to being the one born 1881.

I wondered if the first one died and they named a second son James, but looking at the Lancashire record, it appears he was born under his mother's name.

Hello Fennety,

It may be worth your while putting the name Finnerty (in all it's forms) into the Search Trees box above (in the dark green bar). There are some possibilities of relationships there for you. You can contact the tree owners for further details. Regards. Cx

Here in Canada on his birth certificate they give birth oct 17 1884 in Buckley, England and his parents are James and Mary O'Goffren.
The Salford Protection and Rescue Society had at this time a small monthly newspaper naned The Harvest. In april 1893 they published all schools where the childrens come and one is Buckley Hall (boys).
I'm asking if it's not the same Buckley as on birth certificate.

Eringobragh1916 Report 5 Aug 2011 16:18

Fennety...Buckley Hall was a Boys Home just outside Rochdale run by the Bros of Charity...Part of the Catholic Protection and Resue Soc. set up by Cardinal Vaughan ...they took boys from all areas of Gretaer Manchester....This may be where his "Birth Place" confusion arises.

The home in Patricroft would have been St Joseph's again part of the CPRC which was for children under 12 and run by the Sisters of Mercy....

Why he would have moved from one to another is "interesting"

I wonder could his mothers name be ??? O'Gorman...like you I have been unable to find anything for O'Goffren.

On the 1891 census, Buckley Hall is described as "Roman Catholic Orphanage certified by ****** Government Board as a Poor Law School..." (*** I cannot make out this word)

It was in the Wardleworth area of Rochdale.

Is there a street address on the birth cert?

There is no Finnerty listed as a resident
