Andrew Report 12 Jun 2011 02:08

I am struggling a little to find the details of one of my ancestors. Thomas Harding born c. 1849, married Sarah Hughes in 1868 in the County of Salop (which is apparently a old term for Shropshire).

His occupation was a carpenter and he was living at "Monk Hall". His father is called William Harding and he is also a carpenter. I have him in the 1871 and 1881 but I cannot find him in any census entries before the marriage so I cannot find his parents info.

In the 1871 census it is claimed he was born in Birmingham but in the1881 he states he was born in Manchester so I am a little confused and cannot get a birth cert for him! I suppose it is possible that

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Andrew

Andrew Report 12 Jun 2011 02:41

im not certain but the families are similar and its the best i can find. My direct relative is Harriet harding so i know that her father and mother are Thomas and Sarah so im pretty sure the 1871 censusis right. As for the 1881 census, its the best i could find. If somebody can find a better entry then that would be great...

jax

jax Report 12 Jun 2011 02:51

Like you I am not seeing another that would fit for Harriet but 5 years and completly different areas of birth is odd for Thomas

Andrew Report 12 Jun 2011 02:54

I totally agree but am a little stumped as to what other options there are.
Im hoping that at least I can find his parents and maybe that will bring some light to other areas. Isnt Family History fun!! :-S

jax

jax Report 12 Jun 2011 02:58

Thanks for the info patchem. As I say it's quite confusing with the difference in the 1881 and 1871 census. Anybody having any luck with the earlier census entries?

If it is any help - I think Monk Hall is near Morville, and Monkhampton which is not too far from Bridgnorth in Shropshire ( forgive me if you are local to Shropshire). This could tie in with some of the Births being listed at Bridg(e)north. SO 618 946 is a reference where would would like Monk Hall Grange and Monk Hall

Andrew

Andrew Report 12 Jun 2011 12:19

That is certainly useful to know and as you say helps tie the births etc together. Im still stuck with Thomas' Parents however.

Hello Andrew, do you have Thomas and Sarah's marriage certificate to confirm info?

If that's where you got info in opening post then who were the witnesses? (If one was a sibling it might help us track back, as would an address - or was that the "Monk Hall")

In 1861 there is a Thomas harding aged 9 b birmingham with widowed mother Lucy b1819 Handsworth Staffs
In 1851 she is with husband WILLIAM b1818 but he is a plumber and glazier not a carpenter -however as he died when Thomas was very young he may not have known and just guessed that his fathers trade was the same as his

jax

jax Report 12 Jun 2011 20:08

I think with all these diffent years of birth for him it is going to be difficult

We have 1850 birmingham 1845 Manchester now 1852 birmingham...tough one
