Tracey Report 9 May 2011 15:55

My Great, Great Grandfather has evoked some interest due to his grave being in Newton Harcourt and having served in WW1.
I am hoping that some kind person can shed some light as to his whereabouts in 1911, as I can find nothing at all.

Thomas Pritchard Owen, was born 1889 West Derby, Lancs. presumed bastard as at birth reg. Thomas Pritchard. He married in 3/4 1909 an Ethel Scotchbrook (b.1888 in Newton Harcourt), in Newton Harcourt. Leics. They had a daughter Ethel Owen b. 1910 Surrey, followed by Hilda Mary owen 1911 Surrey. His profession at this time was most likely a gardener and his wife a corset maker/ housewife. All info greatly appreciated.

Many thanx in anticipation, Tracey.

Thankyou very much Vera, I really appreciate this. I'm not really aux faux with Surrey but could you suggest to me a way of finding out if the Cottisloes, as in Lord and Lady of the time, were down that way as he and his wife have working links with them in Newton Harcourt, Leics. and Swanbourne, Bucks with the Freemantles.

At this juncture I am very much the novice, but I did always find it strange that despite his wife and 3 daughters being housed in Swanbourne around the time of his death, my nan well remembered the fleeting encounter whilst he was dying and she of a tender age, that he was buried in Newton Harcourt and (presumed died) in1919.

Vera it is time I bought the certificate, interestingly enough when an illegitemate is born in my family its always a son thus making a tracing very difficult...........in Thomas' case when he enlisted his name was Thomas Pritchard Owen............and Arthur was listed as his father at his death, when was adoption and its legal documenting started?

Vera

Vera Report 9 May 2011 16:34

The reg. district of Billesdon includes Newton Harcourt.

Regarding adoption The adopted childrens register was introduced after 1 Jan 1927 prior to that there was no formal adoption process.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 9 May 2011 16:39

Would seem he was illigitimate and took the name as Owen when his mum married.
have you got his birth cert ??

Tracey

Tracey Report 9 May 2011 16:50

So presumably it was a kindly act of Arthur Owen b. 1850 Welshpool, Berriew, Montgomeryshire,Wales who married Thomas' mother Helen/Ellen Pritchard b.1869 of Wavertree, Lancs to give his surname to Thomas?

I do also know that Arthur and Helen/Ellen went on to have offspring:-
Ida Owen, 1897, Checkley, Staffs.
Desmond Owen, 1899, Bowden, Cheshire.
Edith Owen, 1900, Bowden, Cheshire, given the age gap, it would be interesting to know of their whereabouts in 1911, is this possible?

Thomas' parents were listed via WW1 records as living in Sale/Hale Cheshire and his wife in Swanbourne, Bucks at the time of his death.

Tracey

Tracey Report 9 May 2011 16:53

Vera the name is Cottisloes, sorry may have mis-typed, The Freemantles live in Swanbourne, Ian Duncan-Smith married one of their daughters.

Tracey

Tracey Report 9 May 2011 16:57

Shirley, at this moment in time no I haven't got his cert, but now will, I did find Arthur and Helen /Eleen on a census in the same house but not married, which leads me to think there may have been a dalliance, as Arthur seems from my research to have been married before.

Shirley many thanx for your interest in this.

Tracey Not really a kindly act for Athur .Its not unknown for step children to take on the new husbands surname /especially when a child was illigitimate. Gave them the father they didnt have !!

Tracey Report 9 May 2011 17:08

Vera this a weird one, the Freemantles and Cottisloes are linked, when or before Thomas died my Great, Great Gran Ethel, who had 3 girls of her own also took on her dead sisters girl, the went to live at The Old School House Swanbourne in service to, and opposite the Freemantles home, she governed the children and was also courtesy of family myth the Mushroom taster/tester for the Master.
In 1966 both the Freemantles and Owen to Betts gave birth in March to myself and june/july David Freemantle, who has since gone to Australia in search of roots and to raise funds for charity.
