I am trying to confirm a paternal link, if there is one, between a Samuel Brearley c1841 and a Jonas Brearley born in 1818 in Penistone Yorkshire England, parents Benjamin Brearley and Lydia Holmes.

I have the marriage certificate of Samuel Brearley - wife Mary Jones date 11 April 1861 Marriage in St Peter Chester England. Samuel states his father to be Jonas Brearley – stone mason.

On the 1871 census Samuel is living with his wife and four children in Flint, and his age is given as 31 therefore born c1840, birthplace is given as Sheffield Yorkshire.

On Family Search.org there are marriage records for a Jonas Brearley and Mary Stueart 19th October 1846 St Oswalds Chester. His age is given as 30 Marital status single Father Benjamin Brearley. His wife’s age is given as 40 and her status widow. From this record she does not appear to be Samuel’s mother.

There are 1841 census records for –
a Samuel Brearley age 1 in Sheffield with an Ann Brearley age 26?
A Jonas Brearley age 25 in St Nicholas Newport Lincolnshire occupation stone mason

I cannot find any other records for Jonas or for his wife Mary.

Any help would be very much appreciated

This Samuel is the son of Benjamin Brearley 1802 and Martha Helliwell.
I have his marriage certificate in 1862.He married a Sarah Ann Marsden in Ecclesfield Yorkshire. The marriage certificate gives his father as Benjamin.

This is where I went wrong in the first place. I married this Samuel off to Mary Jones on my tree and am now trying to correct the error.

Incidentally, the Benjamin Brearley 1802 above is the brother of Jonas Brearley 1818

Are you saying that there are two Samuel's one with the father Benjamin and the other with the father Jonas?

Theres no sign of a Samuel with a father Jonas

Which Samuel is 'your' guy?


I cant find a birth for Samuel in Sheffield to match up with the census that Astra posted?

The Samuel in Worsborough, son of Benjamin, who marries Sarah Ann Marsden is definitly mine.

The other Samuel I believe to be part of a different branch of my family, and this is what I am trying to prove.

The problem is that Samuel and Benjamin are fairly common names in my tree and so is the occupation stonemason. The spelling of Brearley also often gets changed and mistranscribed.

I also have not been able to find a birth for a second Samuel Brearley c1840

There is the birth that I posted earlier and that seems to be the nearest match

There is the village of Bradfield in Sheffield and Bradfield is very close to Wortley, a 15 minute walk

I think that this is Jonas....Ive looked at the record and I'm pretty sure it says Jonas and not John

However on the 1841 it does read John....do you think he changed to John from Jonas?

I had this birth record linked to Samuel son of Benjamin Brearley and Martha Helliwell. Ithink I will have to buy the certificate to be absolutely sure

Jonas born 12/11/1818 had brother Samuel born 17/2/1806 he was in 1851 was in Hunself Yorks he was a stone mason.
With him and his wife is Samuel Hudson 1840 Eckington (Sheffield) it states he is a nephew.

Ah that kind of matches with the 1841 posted above. Ann and Samuel with the Hudson's. I though she may have been Ann Hudson originally but couldn't find a marriage for her to a Briesley or Brierley

Mary Brearley 1840 Wales married O/N/D 1883 to Thomas Hindmarsh.

Mary Hindmarsh now a widow.
