ARSTEE Report 4 May 2011 09:14

Hi Dea,

Been up into the early hours trying to link that family to a James or to Thomas. I knew of the family from searchs but hadn't seen William before or where they lived so got quite excited when you found them living there especially with William coming from Yorkshire. Sadly though I couldn't find a link :o(

I have however after getting into it last night tried to narrow down James's from kirkheaton / Dalton / Lepton area.

I found 3, 2 of which are fully traceable. One however is missing after the 1841 census. He belongs to Henry & Elizabeth. Henry's father as far as I can see is listed as John - Isaac's father is listed as Jonathan ??

However there is a death in 1844 of a James in that area but it doesn't give an age obviously so I can't see any other way round but to order that death :o(

Thank you so much for your time and i'll keep you posted x

I know this does not help finding anyone, but it gives an idea of where they lived. Pictures of the Stag Yard and Barker Gate areas at http://www.picturethepast.org.uk also huddersfield family history society is very active. You could check out their website, one of their booklets might hold the key.

My little man is sleeping so I'm back on their tails :o)

Thank you Pam, picturethepast is good, I've used them lots and have the picture of Stag yard already in my family history book :o)

I have just registered with Huddersfield family history society, posted a thread and also brought a book - Kirkheaton buriels, hopefully it might give me what I'm looking for on the missing James cheaper than ordering the cert - fingers crossed X

ARSTEE Report 4 May 2011 19:35

I've found a Martha Briggs in Rastrick - 5.5 miles from kirkheaton

And....... she has a sister SARAH - from initial searches looks like it could be the Sarah who married James (thomas's brother)

And....... their parents were SHOP KEEPERS !!

It's struck me as strange that on G & A's birth certs James is a labourer yet on G's marriage cert he's supposed to be a Shop Keeper

Could he of been remembering wrongly something he was told by his mum when he was young if James wasn't on the scene and that was his mum's death (Martha Briggs) Nottingham 1859 ???

What does anyone think ? Am I clutching at straws ??

Dea

Dea Report 4 May 2011 19:42

WHERE have you found her - can you post the details please?

I have been looking on and off all day for a Sarah with a sister Martha !!

Hi Barbara

Yes, I saw that, it would mean though that she was about 7 months pregnant then - Alice was registered in Nottingham with a birth of 4th June.

I dont know now although girls have always been good at hiding pregnancies if they want so it's possible i suppose ?

Barbara Report 4 May 2011 22:45

Hi
There has to be a connection to Thomas 1831 Dalton has the children were living with him and in Nottingham
I have been trying to help as a mystery I love but this is a real puzzle.
Will keep trying from time to time. Good luck

Isn't it just - I think Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie and even Scooby Doo and his gang would have trouble solving this 1 :o)

Dea

Dea Report 5 May 2011 09:15

Good morning Arstee!

I am off for another look but I am not optimistic about finding anything!

I would be tempted to buy that marriage cert for James Denton and Sarah Briggs. I know it is James + Martha we really want but it looks to me like they didn't actually marry.

James + Sarah DO 'seem' to be connected in some way so the details on there might just help us to find 'your' James + Martha?

Will see if I can find anything today that was not there yesterday.....................

You never did tell us who the witnesses were on George's marriage cert?

ARSTEE Report 5 May 2011 10:53

Hi Dea

I've been at it too - nothing yet :o(

The witnesses on George's marriage are

Thomas & Mary Farmer

ARSTEE

ARSTEE Report 5 May 2011 11:40

Oh dear - looks like another mystery !!

I think I found the Famer marriage -

Marriages Jun 1851 (>99%)

Farmer Thomas Nottingham 15 933
Keeton Mary Ann Nottingham 15 933

But, I can't see them on a census, nothing is jumping out at me at all.........

They married in the 1/4 before Alice's birth !!!

Oh what tangled webs they weaved :o)

Dea

Dea Report 5 May 2011 11:43

Yes, - I found that too - they are probably just friends of theirs?

Can't see a connection.

ARSTEE Report 5 May 2011 11:57

Maybe but they would be alot older than them ?

This afternoon i'll order Alice's marriage cert, it was only a couple of years before Georges but i'd be interested to see what she has put and who her witnesses were..... wish we could download the info straight away - i hate waiting :o)

Thanks again Dea for all your time X

Dea

Dea Report 5 May 2011 12:55

You are welcome - This one has me quite fascinated - I am 'like a dog with a bone' when I can't find what I am looking for. I can't let go until I find something.

I would be more tempted by that James and Sarah Cert, I am sure there would be something useful on there!

Yes, I wish we could download them too - I have no patience when I am mystified !!!!!

ARSTEE Report 5 May 2011 13:17

Ok Dea,

You've been at this longer than me so I'll go with your choice and order that too :o)

I was also going to get the Martha Briggs death - Nottingham 1857 but i'll wait on that one.

So, James & Sarah's marriage and Alice's marriage here we come - well, next week we will anyway - fingers crossed for a flying postman :o)
