We have been researching the family tree for over 2 years now but still seem to be stumped with quite immediate family on one side, just need any ideas that you may have with the mystery we have. I will try to be brief,

My Grandad Charles French married a lady in 1887 by the name of Emily Ricketts and we have the certificate for this, however the 9 children they have when married we have found that the first three on their birth certficate the mum's maiden name is Gay, BUT the mum's maiden name on my mum's birth certificate (their sister) is shown as Ricketts, he married Ricketts in 1887 and cannot find a marriage between him and an Emily Gay so am stumped as to how they can have two different mum's??

Any ideas would be appreciated if you don't mind.

What was the name of your Mum and when was she born? What were the names of the first 3 children and when were they born?

wonder whether she was illegitimate and was reg as Gay on her birth and mum later married a Ricketts. have you looked for her birth and parents marriage or found her on earler census.

on the marriage cert Charles's occupation is given as wood chopper

wonder if this is him on 1881 census
