Peter Report 27 Mar 2011 23:00

Hi there,

I am looking to extend one of my branches of my tree that seems to have become a little stuck.

My ancestors James Lever (c. 1822-bet 1881-1891) and Hannah 'Ann' Monkhouse (c. 1822-1901) were married in Bolton in 1845.

I am trying to find James Lever in the 1841 census and see if I can find his family back over.

James' year of birth ranges from about 1817-1822, and the census confirms his place of birth as Bolton in Lancashire. From his marriage in 1845 I know his father was William Lever.

So, not a lot to go on but can he be found in 1841.

With this, there are two different James Lever's born in Bolton in and about 1817-1822, with a father named William, but DIFFERENT mothers. I am hoping a find in 1841 will help confirm which one is mine.

Thank you,

Peter

rather interesting the way James Lever is entered between two Proctors

I wonder if that indicates he was a son of Ann, and that she is a second wife to James Proctor?

Hi everyone and thank you for this help ... yes the 1845 marriage is them, and sorry yes, James' father was a 'Weaver'. Thank you Evie and LanashireAnn and Sylvia!

Now, I am not sure what these results indicate, but it is looking interesting. Sylvia the baptism in 1815 could be correct, but so could the James Lever born 1820:

Name: James Lever
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 10 Nov 1820
Baptism/Christening Place: St. Peter's, Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England
Father's Name: William Lever
Mother's Name: Mary Lever
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C03231-9
System Origin: England-EASy
Source Film Number: 559177
Reference Number: yrs 1820-1821 p 73

Is there a way I can confirm whose is who? I would not like to search the wrong line ... thank you your help already. Is there a way to confirm?

Thank you Ann, that is James in 1881 and his marriage. I have found him in 1871, 1861 and 1851 ... his wife Ann/Hannah is a widow in 1891, but I have not found a death for him yet.

I hope I can find which family he belongs too. Thank you again!

it's so very difficult pre-1837

One possibility is that it is two separate families

OR could be be James born 1815 died

his mother Ann died

William re-married to Mary

and they had James in 1820?

Of course, James 1815 may not have died ...... it is not unknown for someone to ahve two children with different wives and use the same name for them

Have you tried looking for deaths on that lancs opc site?

sylvia

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 28 Mar 2011 23:22

have you tried possible wills for father William?

or even James himself in case he named other members of family

Peter

Peter Report 28 Mar 2011 23:55

Thank you for the advice Sylvia ... this is a tricky one! I have looked for a death for James, but nothing shows on the Lancashire family search site. Nothing immediatley but I will look again.

As for a Will for James, Ann. I have some difficulty in finding his death ... he died between 1881-1891, and there are some possibilities, but none in the district I was expecting (Runcorn, Cheshire). When I enquire with the register offices, they say they can not help unless i forward a cheque. I am willing to purhcase a cert, but the office is not very helpful in that I am not sure what information to include (i.e. if he died away from home, his informat may not be a relative etc).

Tricky one!

I meant look for

.... a death of the James born in 1815 ......... ie, between 1815 and 1820

..... a death of Ann Lever between 1815 and 1820

...... a marriage of William Lever to a Mary between 1815 and, say, 1830
