Please can someone also check if William Green born1846 in Wigan was still living at Gathurst Wigan in the 1911 census and with whom.

Have you looked for Robert's death to see if he possibly died before 1891 census?

I've found Betsy in the 1891 census, and no Robert, father in -law there, only her grandson called Robert.

On the free BMD there is only 1 adult death between 81 and 91 and that is for a robert Green died 1884 aged 67.
We found a Cemetery record for a Robert Green died 1892 aged 81 who lived at 4 dawber Street Wigan and thought this might be him. His wife is buried in the same Cemetery.

I'll do an address search for that and see who lived there then.

Sorry Mary, Someone called Albert A CROOK and his family lived at 4 Dawber Street, Wigan in 1891. They must have moved out, and then Robert moved in by the time of his death in 1892.

I've not given up just yet! :-)
As you say, Robert died in 1892, and buried in the same cemetery as his wife - his age at death fits, so it must be him.
So he's got to be somewhere in the 1891 census!!
I'll do a christian name search and then look at all the surnames etc to see if its been mistranscribed.

I've just looked again on the Lancashire BMD and that is the only death that seems to fit. Pity his wife was buried like him in a public grave or we would have known for certain if they had been together.
