Suzanne,
No, they weren't sent back to Ireland. Alice Corbett married John Fell in Wigan in 1867, she named her first son after husband John, her second son was named after her father, Thomas, and her first daughter she named Jane, after her mother. - by 1891 the census shows Alice living in Heaton Norris, near Stockport - she went back to her roots, I suppose.

Alan, I agree with you - it looks as if Gillian hit the nail on the head. It does seem that Jane's death was never registered.

Thank you for looking/searching for me, your help is much appreciated.

Lin.

hi lin ,
since my last reply, ive been trolling through the death records, using all types of name variations, but no luck at all.
i think gillian is more than likely right, and for some reason her death was not registered.
good luck,
alan

I've looked in Scotland censuses...in 1841 the census says Benjamin and Thomas born out of county, Ireland or Scotland.

Wonder if the children Mary, Alice and Joseph were sent back to either of these places?

Suzanne

Ps..watching Brian Cox now..bye bye.

Thanks for your thoughts and ideas Suzanne.

I really don't believe that corpses can get married. :-)

No, Sandwich is not near Stockport.
The Corbett family came from Ireland (Belfast) and they seem to have settled in Hillgate, Stockport and Heaton Norris, Cheshire c.1819ish.
The 1841 census shows that they moved to Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire. (Just up the road from Stockport).

There were quite a number of Corbett baptisms at St Mary's, Stockport, and the majority recorded in the Church registers are my ancestors..
Mary Ann Corbett was baptised at St Mary's Church, Stockport, however, her sister Alice was born 24th December 1839, Margaret St, Ashton Under Lyne.

Going with the previous mention of a 1845 marriage........

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Sep 1850 (>99%)
CAMPBELL Jane Ashton 20 8

Is it possible that she died as a Campbell but was buried with her Corbett husband and son? Then again the dates in the burial records would have to be wrong too...

Sorry this is my best guess!!

Jane's name is recorded in the burial register of the Church of St. Peters, Ashton. There is no headstone.

Baby Thomas Henry Corbett died at Shaw Hole, Newton, 17th October 1845 aged 4 months. Informant of the death Edward Corbett, followed by the word 'brother' which has been scratched out and replaced by occupier, Shaw Hole.... and this is the bit that has niggled me for over eight years as I am sure Edward Corbett is the grandfather of the deceased child, and father of Thomas Henry Corbett who dies aged 29 in 1844.

Where did the child Thomas Henry Corbett die? Could mother and baby have gone to her parents and died there? Just because Jane's name is on the headstone, doesn't mean her body is in there? Just a thought.

Thanks Alan, I have a photocopy of the actual register entry - St. Mary's Church, Stockport.

I also have a marriage certificate for a Mary Ann Corbett who married Joseph Haigh 9th May 1858 at Ashton Parish Church. Mary Ann's father is listed as Thomas Corbett, Overlooker on the certificate, although it does not state her father is deceased.
This marriage was the most likely one for Jane and Thomas' daughter, Mary Ann, since my Corbett ancestors did live in Ashton. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find Mary Ann Corbett listed on the 1851 census in the Ashton area, therefore, I have no idea who cared for her after her mothers death.

Hi Alan, Yes I agree with you. It is most probable that Jane died during childbirth of perhaps caught an infection after giving birth - this branch of my family is a tragic one. So sad.
I can't find my St Peters Church burial extracts at the moment (I've packed everything up as I was due to move house, but the move has fallen through!). If memory serves me right, Jane was buried about two weeks after the birth date of her son Thomas. I just can't find her in the Indexes, and I so needed to find out who registered her death as that might have helped to clear up an uncertainty in my research that has niggled me for eight years now.

im wondering if jane died giving birth to baby thomas,
that happened to an ancestor of mine. so her death could also be 6th july 1845. long shot i know, but worth looking into.

Jane died, honestly! She was buried in St Peters Churchyard, Ashton Under Lyne. Her two daughters were orphaned, Alice Corbett was adopted by her uncle Joseph Corbett & his wife, Susannah, they all appear on the 1851 census, Glossop. :-)

I've no idea what happened to the other daughter, Mary Ann Corbett born c.1839.

Thanks Gillian, that has just answered my question - perhaps the death wasn't registered, although, the family appear to have registered all other family deaths - wonder why they didn't register Jane?
