Hi Everyone....back again as I have some more info!
The informant on my Grandfather's death was D Duncan address Fort Augustus Abbey School, Invernesshire. Date 1944.
I now know there was also a Robert Duncan at the school at the same time and am wondering if this was brother of D Duncan.
Robert known as Bob married Hannah in the early 1960s in Canada and they had a son Colin S.
Perhaps if I could contact Colin he might know of the family history?
I can't stay long online sorry but you can always get me on [email protected] x

I'm going to send you some info privately about that Newcastle marriage.

JaneyCanuck Report 2 Mar 2011 17:05

There is indeed a Cecil Duncan birth in 1931 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but with a very different mother's surname. Will send it privately.

... Hold on, you're looking for a D, so that's not it ...

Is it possible that D is a child of Cecil's first marriage? Or of Cecil and his second wife born before their marriage, i.e. possibly registered under her birth surname or previous married name?

There is in fact a marriage of a Cecil Duncan in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1930, and the birth above is to that marriage -- the wife/mother's surname is spelled 3 different ways in the indexes at Ancestry: on her marriage entry, on the husband's marriage entry and on the child's birth, so tracking other births will be a big complicated ...

... Seems to be only one other birth to that marriage, a daughter in 1934.

I think that wasn't your Duncan's first marriage, though.

There's a D Duncan birth with mother Boulton in 1923 in Willesden. That's the closest it gets.

Have you tried looking for the birth in Scotland under one of the mother's surnames?

Would a child of about 13 have been the informant of a death? As I understand it, the death was 1944, and you're looking for a birth around 1931.

Might the informant's address have indicated that he was a member of staff at the school, not a student?

Charlie found no birth record in Scotland of D. Duncan, son of Cecil MacDonagh Duncan and Lilian Helena Boulton King Duncan - can anyone find a birth or perhaps death certificate in England and Wales for him? It may be likely to be in the Newcastle upon Tyne area, and their marriage was in 1931, so some time around there? In 1944 he was attending the Abbey School Fort Augustus in Invernesshire and I have already contacted the Old Boys there but have had no reply.
Thanks.

Anne, re your post in the other thread -- you're much more likely to reach that poster if you click on his name and send him a message. After several months he may not be checking his thread(s) here. If he has a current email address in his account at this site, he will receive a notice of a private message (no notice is sent of posts in threads).

Thank you Tempest that's very kind of you - this has taken me 32 years to get this far.

As you may have guessed, I'm in Canada, so if I can help with sorting out the university connection here, let me know by PM.

Thank you Janey, I have already contacted the Old Boys and am waiting for a reply.

I have a University name in Canada which I am also tracing as I believe the person I am tracing to be still alive.

In Canada you fall into a black hole for records, as you may know.

First, they're held provincially, so unless you know where someone is/was in Canada, you start out with a handicapp.

Second, privacy legislation prohibits the disclosure of bmd records (vital records) for long periods: generally 100 years for births, 85 years for marriages and 75 years for deaths (some provinces have shorter periods).

Only about half of provinces have any searchable databases on line.

Google.ca and the online telephone directory are often the only resources. Without a full name even ... it's a tough one.

I think the school you referred to (from googling) is actually the *Abbey* School, Fort Augustus.

This is the Old Boys Association website:

and here is its page at FriendsReunited:

Thanks again for your kindness.

Hi Anne

That's a possibility as Cecil didn't die until 1944.

Mary

Edit to add: Charlie's thread is on the General board, I've just nudged it up for you.

Anne

Anne Report 27 Feb 2011 22:32

Thank you Mary that is a useful tip!
I have also just read that someone is looking for a George Duncan born in 1942, in exactly the same area of Glasgow as D Duncan - wondering if there may be a family link!

Anne

A member on here using the board name Charlie is offering to do lookups at Edinburgh RO, it might be worth sending him a message asking him to do a search for you?

OK, thank you all so much for your guidance.

Have removed duplicate postings - these were actually about the same family, but as I have discovered more, the search has changed - hence the new thread for D Duncan, born in 1931 ish. Yes he may still be alive - I have a suspicion in Canada, but not sure. But this is a new search - perhaps for his marriage and children

I have also edited comments as requested.

If there's anything else I've done which conflict with the guidelines, just let me know and I can update that too. I don't use this site very much so I am not as up to date with the protocols as all you regulars.

This is a very personal search for me, and this search for family is very important to me.

Thanks.

I never do understand this "offended" business ... ;) I wasn't offended. My concern was for the privacy of possibly living people. Glad you edited.

Oh great, a gazillion threads. I trust you will edit them as required.

There are rules ... one subject, one post. And not posting personal info about possibly living people, which the details of the birth of "D" struck me as.

Thank you Catherine this is very helpful.
Apologies Janey if you were offended, I have amended my post.

JaneyCanuck Report 27 Feb 2011 22:07

We cross-posted ... so again, perhaps you would remove the info from your new post that isn't really germane to this search? (first marriage info and parenthetical comment).

I didn't think it necessary to post the details of LHB's previous life events ...
