The witness to the marriage for Ada would be Edgar Ravenhill Sharpe - her brother-in-law.

Thank you all.

Well the mystery just thickens about Mr Harry Chappelle/Preston.

According to my aunt he died in 1936, so Martha was not a widow in 1891. Would the scandal caused by a divorce/separation have meant she lied and called herself a widow?

He was a vintner at the Royal Albion in Brighton, so there may be an avenue of investigation there. Maybe a professional body?

I can't find an official record of his death though, possibly because I am looking over so many years for so many names. If he changed his name are there official records for that?

Will the marriage certificate give information about his father?

Lynne, so her father is dead or disappeared.

By the way, when I said marriage certificate in my last post I meant the marriage of Harry and Martha.

Yes, she might well have called herself a widow if living apart from her husband.

Divorce was very rare in those days ........ it was very expensive and very difficult to obtain.

There are numerous examples of spouses living apart, some of them continued to call themselves married, others called themselves widows or widowers, while still otherrs took up with new partners.

Hi, Erica.
Just to confirm, my comment about the witness being Edgar Ravenhill Sharpe, her brother-in-law, was in answer to Barbara's post on page 1 about not being able to read the names.
Regards
Lynne
