Find Ancestors

I need to view a couple of certificates in order to move forward, but don't want all the expense involved of getting several.
I wondered if there was a place I could go to that would hold the hard copies for viewing?

You cannot view certs without buying them

Those would be Parish Register entries.........not Civil Registration certificates

There may be ways that don't involve viewing the certs, but we need to know your problem if we are to try to help

Thanks Flick for your replies, and sorry for the delay in posting back.

I have been using information written down by my great aunt to put together a tree. From this I have reached a block with getting much at all about a Harry Chappelle. This may possibly be to do with mis-spelling, or there is a French connection (his father was apparently from France) so I suppose there is a very slim chance he went over there.

What I have on him is that he married Martha Dent in 1877 in Chorlton. The name in the register is Harry Chappell, so although spelt wrong I am fairly confident that that is the correct person. However, that is all the confident information I have on him. I have a relative in South Manchester, so she may oblige and if possible find the marriage certificate if it is available there locally for free.

They had four children, apparently, according to my aunt. Ada, Elsie, Harry and Frank (possibly twins?) . These haven't been verified. The one concrete fact I have is that I know Ada married my great grandfather Claude Pollard at St Marylebone church in 1904, but I am not sure of her birth date or place. There are several possibilities and I don't want to order a birth certificate for all of them.

Noone convincing shows up on any census, under the spelling Chappelle or Chappell. I have considered finding Ada's birth certificate too

Harry Chappell apparently went to Brighton Grammar school and was a Vintner in Brighton, so that makes a Sussex connection likely. Also, he may have changed his name to Preston, just to confuse things, although Ada didn't as her maiden name is listed as Chappelle! I don't know whether I am looking for a Preston/Chappell/Chappelle/Chapple/Chapelle/Chapell/Chapel and I am starting to go around in circles.

Just to add to marriage found for Ada and Claude in 1904. The witnesses are: Herbert ?( can't read) and looks like Edgar Ravenhill Sharpte. The occupation of Samual Pollard is 'Gentleman'.

Before you send your rellie off chasing this up, you ought to find out where the register is now.
My guess is Manchester library. Check out their website.

Flick's technically right. You can't see a certified copy of this record without paying. It is the original record though. Your rellie can make an uncertified copy. If it had been more recent, you could have paid the vicar for a certified copy. He also sent a copy to the local registrar (this record's now relocated to Manchester), and you can pay the Manchester registrar to make a copy of their copy. The local office also sent a copy of their copy to the GRO, so you can now get a certified copy/image of their copy of the local registrar's copy.
