Can someone do me the kindness of looking up the 1911 Census.

May Elizabeth Woods. Born 1907, Shoreditch, London.

I cannot seem to find Mother in my searches.

Thank you in advance.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 5 Feb 2011 22:52

Do you know who would be living with her?

Have you tried a free search of the 1911?

I don't understand, can't seem to find Mother, do you mean you can't find her mother's name or you can't find her mother in the census?

Christine2 Report 5 Feb 2011 22:53

There is one with just the name May Woods who's mother may be Amelia aged 39. Would this be her? Father William 48 and two other children Evelyn 6 and William 2.

Crickey you were all very quick. Thank you soooooo much.

I think Jax has it, it now confirms what I had believed, it seems Mum Amelia had been married before, and May was from her second marriage, as she has her children from her first family living with her.

I didnt realise that you could search a free 1911 census. I thought you had to have an address, and I did not have one.

Thanks again folks.
Most appreciated.

Best wishes

The link

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

doing it for free, if you find a person you can search for others with the same surname 'living with' in the same place, etc.

Pleased you said that Jax.

I went onto the link above, and all I got was exactly what you said.

I thought I had gone wrong somewhere.

Will try to keep my requests to a minimum.

Thank you all once again.

Best wishes.

I don't think that you need to keep requests to a minimum, if people want to do lookups to help you then they will.

Good luck with your research.

for some reason my comment seems to have been interpreted negatively

I do not subscribe for the 1911 census but I find the free search facility quite useful

I think many people here actually like to try their own searches initially, and if details are wanted then they have an idea of what to ask for from other members with subscriptions

I could also have pointed out that to be sure to find people with different surnames living with someone the wildcard search works

for instance search for

surname *A*
living with
given name May
surname Woods
in Shoreditch

and that will find the Douthwaites in the household

in this case, so would searching for surname *E*, *I*, *O*, or *U*, lol.

This is just an option for anyone who wants to use it.

jax

jax Report 6 Feb 2011 20:43

I did'nt see it as being negative Chrissie

Not very good at these things and have never tried the free search as such, but would the Douthwaites have come up if searching for May Woods?

rootgatherer Report 6 Feb 2011 20:47

I didn't think that your comment was negative - indeed that is the way I search the 1911. I wouldn't pay for a sub. as I don't have many English rellies! Just the odd one or two on the OH's side. mine are all Scottish and Irish.

Many people are unaware that you can do a basic search free of charge and that you only need to pay to see the full details.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 6 Feb 2011 21:01

Yup, search for surname *A* with a wildcard search, living with May Woods in Shoreditch, and you get the three Douthwaites.

I just thought it was funny that Douthwaite has all the vowels in the alphabet in it so any one of them would have worked !
