John Henry Foster 1866, Aston, Cheshire

Sheila Report 31 Jan 2011 21:11

In the 1891 Census, John Henry Foster was living in Marton, Warwickshire with his wife Mary Ann [born c.1865, Knutsford, Cheshire] and their son Clarence Henry Arthur [aged 2, born in Marton] in the school house - John Henry and Mary Ann were the schoolmaster/mistress there.

In 1901 Clarence [12] is living with his paternal grandparents in Knutsford, Cheshire. [ Samuel Foster, born Little Leigh, Cheshire 1838 and Mary Ann, born Knutsford, Cheshire, 1851] Clarence stays in Cheshire [until 1911 and beyond] - I know about him, but I can't find John Henry nor his Mary Ann anywhere!

Mary Ann appears in the 1911 census as a widow, now married to a William Keeves [born abt. 1864 in Woolwich] They have been married for 5 years - and I have found the record of their marriage in Bethnal Green 1906; they have two children together, born prior to the marriage - Sydney W W Keeves, aged 9 and Dorothy E.A. Keeves aged 5.

BUT - there are also 4 previously unknown Fosters; Ada M. L. born about 1891 in Marton, Warwickshire, Sybil M F born 1897 in Islington, Violet M G born 1898 in Islington, and Elsie A.O. 1891 in Hackney. These Fosters are my dad's cousins. Where were they in 1901?

I can't think where to look; I can't find a death date for John Henry; I don't know if Mary Ann did a runner...

I NEED to know what happened to John Henry; I don't know quite why it matters so much to me; I didn't know of his existence until about 3 weeks ago...

Oh Maureen! The plot thickens... the first names are right, and I have just found a baptism record for Sydney W W Keeves - Sydney William Wallace Keeves... and his father has the same names! Are they living under an alias? How exciting.... but where is John Henry? However did you think to look them up as Wallace?!

Lots to think about here; thank you to everyone - give yourselves several gold stars!!

Oh! That makes sense!!! I don't see John anywhere, darn it.

I found the "Wallaces" by doing a search for Ada-born Warwickshire in London and that one was pretty obvious.

Tricky bunch!!

I wonder if John Henry "kept" Clarence while Mary Ann stayed with her (neighbour?) and the girls? Have you found John's siblings in 1901 in Cheshire? He may be with a brother or sister. ?? Good luck!

Clarence moved to Cheshire to live with his paternal grandparents; my dad always said that his father [John Henry's brother] and mother often discussed Clarence's 'situation' but would stop talking when my dad came into the room - and he was never considered old enough to know! Family lore is that John Henry died young, possibly 1900 -01? but I can't find anything to confirm this. He's not with his brothers anyway, wherever he is. Anything is possible with this lot!

Any ideas, anyone, as to how I might find a death date for John Henry Foster, born Aston, Cheshire abt. 1865/66?

Your help is much appreciated, thank you.
