Could you help me please? I've been trying to find the marriage record of my G Granddad Charles Chapman b1853 in Shorditch. I have found him and my G Nan Elizabeth b1858 on the 1881,1891 & 1901 census. On the 1911 Census she is a widow. But no marriage record

Many thanks

Joy

Do you have a birth certificate for one of their children, to give Elizabeth's surname before she was married, please?

There is a marriage in free BMD but it is registered in the December qr of 1865 - they married young :-)

Marriages Dec 1865
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Allen Elizabeth Thrapston 3b 436
Chapman Charles Thrapston 3b 436

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/districts.pl?r=39280142&d=bmd_1293526012

The district Thrapston spans the boundaries of the counties of Huntingdonshire and Northamptonshire

But I cannot see them in 1871.

I don't think that can be them as Charles was born 1853 & Elizabeth b1858 according to the 1881 Census. and they were both born in Shoreditch, London and both living there. On the 1911 Census when asked how long married she has put 31yrs and then this is crossed out because she was a Widow - so they must have married about 1880.

Thanks

Elizabeth would have been 7 in 1865.....or am I missing something.

Hi,

Going by her stated birth year and place of birth it could be her . Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of info on her side of the family.

Thanks

I can only think that his surname must have been mistranscribed. I shall keep looking for a little while and then shall have to leave the computer and shall return tomorrow.
In the meantime, Vera may have found it before then .... :-)

Team work, I like it :-)

Vera Report 18 Jan 2011 22:45

I think I will also be leaving the computer....getting past my bedtime :-))

Either as Joy says his name has been mistranscribed.....or they never married.

I appreciate both of your help. It is so frustrating when you have all the info but still can't find it. As you say tomorrow is another day.

Thank you

There is a public tree on ancestry that gives his birth as 11 Apr 1852 - is that correct? and states his wife as Elizabeth Ann Allen - but doesn't give a marriage, bother!

Goodnight :-)

Their address was Blackstone Rd in 1891 - I don't have his bc for some reason, I thought I did, I'll check this out for you. His parents were Robert Chapman & Hannah Whiting.

Goodnight

Hi Joy, yes that would be good, thank you.

Although they may not have been married to each other, maybe one of them was still married to someone else. So this will be my next search. This is the only explanation I can think of !!

Many thanks
