Good Morning all,
I just stumbled on this page.
I was recently asked to do some research for a Mary Joan Edge.
Unfortunately she passed away this morning Sept 15, 2011 age 87.
Unknown to many and contrary to others, she was the daughter of William Edge b 1903, big band leader, Bill Edge and his boys born 1903.
He married a Elanor Radford in 1923 and later divorced her.
In this marriage he had 4 children

Mary Joan 1923
Robert 1925
William 1929 d 1930
William 1931

He then Married Catherine Evans and had the following children:
Pauline 1939
Anne 1941
David 1944
William H 1944
Susan 1947

Hi Martin

I have been reading your post and was wondering if you have figured it all out yet, your Amelia Reddington born 1919 in Salford is the daughter of Amelia Edge born 1899 in Salford and John W Reddington who married in 1916 in Salford, Amelia Reddington born 1919 married a Ernest Smith in Dec 1937.

Martha Edge born 1910 in Salford is the sister of Amelia Edge born 1899, who's parents are James Edge born 1874 Worsley and mary Florence Gibbons, Martha Edge born 1910 married a Ernest Partington in Sep 1933 and had a son Kenneth born 1936 in manchester i hope this helps some, regards Marie.

Me again lol. I remebered after I posted my last message that I had the 1911 census (original) record for Clara Edge and William Henry Edge Jnr. It states on the census record that they had two kids with only William Jnr surviving and that she was only married for 3 1/2 years. This would make the 1894 date the correct date for William Snr's Death.

Hi Martin,

According to Ancestry and Free BMD UK, William Henry Edge b. Dec 1/4 1862, and was married to Clara Helen Wilkenson on the 9th December 1891 ( I have there marriage certificate). From what I found on Ancestry he died Dec 1/4 of 1894 in Salford, Lancashire. I will be ordering William's death certificate sometime in the next couple of weeks so I will have clear answer.

I have been doing some research on the Gahans and as of yet I have not found a Martha. But I will keep looking just in case I have missed something. As I said earlier, to my knowledge my Grandfather Thomas didn't have a sister named Martha.
I plan on ordering Grandfather Thomas' siblings Certificates this year which will include Birth, Marriage and Death.

I was wondering also if I ended up sending you that picture of Thomas Edge 1886 (Amelia's brother) I have a pretty bad memory so if I didn't let me know and I will do so. I think I still have your email address.

Lancashireann all ive got left on that side of the family is my aunty jean who told me it was my gran's aunty Madge that she thinks it was on my grans mothers side and that she married a Ernest Partington and had a son called Kenneth Partington.

are you sure it is a Martha Egde you are looking for? You said in one post that you were looking for your gran's Aunty Madge. I think Madge is more usually a derivative of Margaret.

In fact are you sure her surname was Edge? was she your Gran's father's sister or her mother's?

Just reading through some of the previous messages and thought I would point out that Clare Edge was married to Thomas Edge's brother William Henry Edge (Thomas of course being Mary Ann Edge's husband). Her full name was Clara Helen Wilkinson and they had one son named William Henry Jnr who was born in 1892. Clara's husband William died in 1894. Clara and William were married on the 9th December 1891.

To my knowledge my Grandfather Thomas did not have a sister by the name of Martha. There was only Elizabeth, Sarah, Amelia and Ethel and one brother named Harry.

I would like to note that Mary Anne Edge - nee Gahan ( Wife of Thomas Edge) would have been 53 in 1910. Her birth date as stated on her birth certificate was the 27th September 1857. Great- Grandmother Mary was widowed in 1896.

your probably right about Amelia being born in 1883 and i will have to get the certificate like u said

OK - well one thing is that your Amelia seems to have been born in 1883 not 1884 - just going by the birth reg found for her.

I think your best bet is to order that Partington / Edge marriage cert to prove one way or another.

Just curious as there is that 1930 Salford marriage for a Martha Edge to William Philpotts, now of course they could have divorced or she was widowed and then married again, but I would have imagined it would be under Philpotts not Edge.

they also had a son called Kenneth and i have found a Kenneth Partington born Manchester dec 1936 who's mothers maiden name was edge

my gran was Amelia Semmens nee (reddington ) born 1919 Salford Manchester her mum was Amelia Reddington nee (edge ) 1884 Salford and her parents were Thomas Edge C 1857 Manchester and Mary Edge nee ( Gahan ) 1857 Deansgate Manchester. The person i'm trying to find is what my mum said was my gran's Aunty Madge who Married Ernest Partington the only one i can find is on bmd is between a Martha Edge and Ernest Partington Sep 1933. regards Martin

The 1911 entry for Martha that Jonesy found gives a son James as being 1 - the image actually states he was 11. James and Mary Florence had 11 children of which 3 had died.

Is it possible that this James was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann?

I think it's also worth pointing out that the 1910 Salford birth for a Martha Edge might well tie up with this marriage:

I think it would be worth you purchasing the marriage cert for your Martha and Mr Partington to be able to get further back, it should give you her age and her father's name.

I do think it's unlikely that your Amelia born 1883 would have a sister born around 1910 - esp as your Amelia's mother was a widow by 1901, unless she was an illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann after she was widowed, or a child of Amelia - born illegitimately and brought up by Mary Ann as another sibling of Amelia rather than as her own daughter. (not uncommon) Or perhaps a child of one of Amelia's siblings.

I'm guessing you know for sure that this Martha who married Mr Partington is definitely your granny's aunty?

Mary Ann had 7 children - 1 had died.
Clara had 3 children - all had died.
George had 2 children - none died.

Is it possible that Martha might have been a child of one of Mary Ann's children?

Is this your Amelia, if so, her mother was a widow in 1901 and it is also unlikely that an Amelia born in 1884 would have a sister born in 1910 with the same mother? (Though not impossible).

However, if this IS your Amelia, she would not have had such a sister.

Thanks Jonesey but the Martha Edge i'm looking for had a sister called Amelia 1884 in salford and a Father called Thomas Edge who's wife was called Mary.Do you know if there was any more Martha Edge in 1911 census from that area. Thanks again Martin
