Trying to find Jack Meredith born 1922, possibly in wales.
Jack's father was George Henry Meredith, who was a coal miner and lived in New Bridge, Monmouthshire in 1943.
Jack was in the Welsh Guards in 1943

There arent that many marriages for his father, I dont suppose you know his mothers name?
Was 'Jack' his birth name or do you think he could have been called 'John'?
We need your feedback before we can help

Newbridge comes under Newport so possible parents and siblings:
Marriages Mar 1912 Cooper Mary E Meredith Newport M. 11a 274 Meredith George H Cooper Newport M. 11a 274
Births Sep 1913 Meredith John Cooper Newport M 11a 662
Births Dec 1914 Meredith Muriel G Cooper Newport M 11a 638
Births Jun 1920 Meredith Ronald Cooper Newport M 11a 753
Births Sep 1922 Meredith George Cooper Newport M. 11a 547 Could this be Jack? If he was named the same as his father he may have been nicknamed Jack to differentiate him from his father?
Births Sep 1928 Meredith Thomas Cooper Newport M. 11a 462
Do you know if Jack is still alive or whether he died before 2006? We might be able to find a death reference for him which might help us locate the right birth etc.

Hi all, Thank you for your replies and efforts to help. Flick is right, the source of the information is the marriage of Jack and Julia in 1943. Jack and Julia's daughter is related to me and i am trying to find her family history for her. unfortunately she knows little of her father because he and her Mum went their separate ways when she was a little girl.
It did occur to me that he might really have been "John" but I can't find any evidence of him after his marriage in 1943.
Alex, I don't know if Jack is still alive, or even if he stayed in Surrey or moved elsewhere.
I couldn't find a birth record for him, which might have pointed his Mum's maiden name either.
He seems to be a mystery.

If the marriage that Flick has posted for you is the correct one, then the next step is to buy that certificate to see how old Jack was
It will also have his fathers name and occupation on the certificate which is a way of cross checking you have the correct marriage
You can purchase online at the GRO for £9.75

Hi Ginny,
Thanks for your advice, I have the marriage certificate, but it doesn't help all that much. It shows that Jack was 21 when he married in January 1943 (which is why I have assumed that he must have been born in 1921).
His father is shown on the certificate as George Henry Meredith, whose occupation was coal miner. Jack's home address is given on the marriage certificate as Frewon st, New Bridge, Monmouth. But he obviously wasn't living there at the time of his marriage as he was in the Welsh Guards, and according to their website they were stationed in Surrey at the time, which makes a sense as his marriage was in Kingston,Surrey.
Fairthorn, Thanks for your help too, but I think the dates of birth on the two "jacks" you found are not quite right. I also assumed, that if his dad was Miner in Wales, he was probably born there.
I do appreciate everyone's help. there are just too many Jacks and Georges to be sure I have the right ones.

This doesn't help much, but the Meredith-Cooper marriage certificate would confirm that George's age, and then I suspect this is his death:
Name: George Henry Meredith Birth Date: 18 Jun 1888 Death Registration Month/Year: 1978 Registration district: Newport Inferred County: Gwent Volume: 28 Page: 0166
Births Sep 1887 ? MEREDITH George Henry Newport M 11a 178
People's actual year of birth was sometimes forgotten when they died at that age.
That and an 1884 birth are the only George Henry Meredith births in Newport 1880-1900.
However, in trees here at GR there are
George 1893 NEWPORT Gwent Wales George 1892 NEWPORT Gwent Wales
Those tree owners might be worth contacting.
A possible matching death: Name: Mary Ellen Meredith Birth Date: 15 Dec 1889 Death Registration Month/Year: 1971 Registration district: Newport Inferred County: Gwent Volume: 8c Page: 1097
although the only Cooper births that would match were in Carlisle Q4 1889 and Tynemouth Q1 1890.
This is the Jack Meredith whose 2000 death Fairthorn posted above:
Births Mar 1922 Meredith Jack Harrison Ashton 8d 865

5 Jack Meredith births 1920-23 according to freebmd I think all can be eliminated or are improbable:
The Jack Meredith born 1922 Ashton, there was a marriage between Ernest Meredith and Gladys Harrison Jun 1921 Ashton.
Jack born Bury - father George K married Stott in Rochdale - George was on 1911 census at Bury with middle name Kennington.
Jack born Wrexham - 2 poss marriages between Meredith/Jackson neither are George.
Jack born Dudley - again 2 poss marriages Meredith/Hill, but neither George.
Which leaves Jack S, born 1920 Prescott, mmn Meredith - so probably not likely?

'Jack' was 21 in Jamuary 1943.....so could not have been born as late as JAS 1922
His latest possible DOB would have been in Jan 1922, up to, and including, the date of the marriage

Hi Flick, I take your point but wondered if he wasn't really Jack then he may have lied about his age as well, to get married without parential consent, or to get into the Welsh Guards in the first place as we don't know how long he had been serving.
Along with the possible George 1911 census details, there was a Mary E Cooper living in the same street, thought I'd posted it at the same time, but it isn't there. It may not be relevant, but though it worth checking out, an electoral roll luck-up would be handy for the 1943 address!

mac: "Is there a way of checking for a death for the George Meredith born Sept qtr 1922 - under the name of George or Jack without have the exact date of birth?"
Only by going through the list of deaths of Merediths born 1921 +/- 1 year looking for matching names.
George Meredith dob 11 Jun 1921 1974 Hereford - George Meredith (mother Raymond) Jul Aug Sep 1921 Ludlow George Meredith dob 6 Oct 1921 Feb 1990 Stourbridge - George Meredith (mother Rowley) Oct Nov Dec 1921 Stourbridge George Henry Meredith dob 21 Jan 1921 May 1990 Cheltenham - George H Meredith (mother Elliotts) Jan Feb Mar 1921 Gloucester - George H Meredith (mother Weaner) Jan Feb Mar 1921 Bristol
I do agree it's possible Jack made himself older than he was when he enlisted/married. In case that was what happened, and he maybe maintained the fiction for his year of birth but kept his birthday, having the exact date of birth from the birth certificate would mean a search of deaths after 1969 could be done using that.
Were we also neglecting the maybe obvious? I looked for war deaths at CWGC but didn't see anything likely there either.
The 1911 George and Mary records you have certainly seem likely.

No Jack death, meant to imply that.
A Harold John, a Leonard John, and several various Johns.
There are these:
Jack Meredith 26 July 1920 - Aug 2002 Swansea - born Q3 1920 Bury? mother Stott Jack Richard Meredith 25 April 1920 - 1983 Shrewsbury - born Q2 1920 Wrexham, mother Jackson

Going back to an earlier posting you say your friends parents "went their own way" -does she know if they divorced, and/or did her mother ever re-marry, and if so what year?
There are a couple of George/Jack's deaths missing from death list Janey has kindly dug up - maybe some still alive or emigrated.
