Hello everyone
I have just received my uncles Navy war badges. They were given to me in the original small brown box addressed from OHMS. In it are his 1939-1945 medal, the France and Germany Star and the 1939-1945 Star. Also in the box there are 3 others; an East lancs Egypt badge, a plastic RAOC cap badge BUT also an unidentified Wings badge.
I would love to know what it is and who it may have belonged to.
It is brass, 2 3/4 inch across, blue enamel wings either side of a red enamel circle with 2 capital E's inside, the smaller E on the middle strut of the larger capital E.
Can anyone identify this badge ?

Hi Joan,

I just googled royal navy badges and the first site that came up seems good. It has loads of pictures of badges and you might be lucky enough to find yours.... I'll have a look too but I think you will have more idea what it looks like!

Kind regards,

Cathy

Thanks Cathy, I will take a look but have a funny feeling this isn't a Naval badge. Was looking on the RAF sites. because of the wings.

Could it be a fleet air arm badge?

Joan

Joan Report 30 Nov 2010 21:40

Hi Katie
Thanks for your suggestion. Just looked at the website for Fleet air Arm and No it's not there. They seem to be very intricate compared to this basic looking badge. I notice that the wing shapes are not like the ones on the usual sites. They point upwards - the badge looks like an upside down moustach.

Hi Joan, It is possible to upload photos onto the "Success videos and photos" on genes, perhaps you could try that and then someone might more easily recognise it. Good luck!

Joan

Ive had a look at the photo, it is my considered opinion it is not a military item that say would be awarded to a serving military person but more something that is described as a "Sweetheart brooches" which would be given by the person to his loved one.

You can still get these today, although vey costly

Here is a link which shows some of them, whilst yours does not show but there are similarities.

Just more thought

Thanks George; off to have a look now. Sounds romantic
Joan
What a lovely selection of sweetheart brooches - unfortunately none the same as my brooch.
I notice they all have crowns on top. not mine.
Initialled fronts N for navigator, B for bomber etc What could the EE stand for ? That is if it is one.

I don't really know much more I'm afraid, i personally have never seen anything like it.

I can only offer are the initials those of the person giving or receiving, i still think its more of a decorative item rather than an award.

I hope you get answers from the site that Cathy has mentioned, i will continue to look, i am interested to see a final result.

it looks so classy, might be worth a bob or too as well.

Electrical Engineer???

This is the only reply I've had so far......

"well, if it is really old-fashioned looking ( like ancient Egyptian) , it would be called a winged solar disk.

In the 1950s, airline pilots wore similar wings, where the EE would probably represent the name of an airline. Those would be quite sturdy. Then they gave away toy ones for children. No idea why those would have an EE on them.

EE abbreviations include
Electrical Engineering
Electronic Engineering

there are at least 80 other definitions for EE or E-E.

EE is the IATA code for Aero Airlines - which at least gets us back to an area you would expect to find wings."

Hi Joan,

My 23 year old overgrown teenager is well impressed that I managed to
post a question and get an answer on yahoo!!!

Perhaps George and I will be in for cut of the proceeds if it turns out to be worth thousands :-))
