Have sent you the Army Pension Record images.

To go further back with Lancelot you will need Scotlandspeople. It is a pay to view site (£6 for 30 credits) but you can view and download certs and Scottish certs give far more info than English ones, eg a birth cert will show both parents full names and when and where they married.

MaureeninNY,
It looks a likely link as Wigton and Carlisle are not too far away from each other.
If you get a chance to c and p the 1871 census record that would be great!
Thanks,
Phil

Philip

Philip Report 29 Nov 2010 15:53

Potty,
Really interesting about the two marriages - I didn't know that. I had the 1900 marriage in my records.
I did know he was a lifelong soldier and that he was in the Royal Engineers. I really need to access his army records to find out the detail. The Hong Kong link makes sense as one of his children was born in Hong Kong. Hopefully Father Christmas will bring me Ancestry membership this year!!
The 1891 Census information fills the gap nicely.
Many thanks

This looks to be him in 1901. I see that the marriage is coming up in 1900 and 1902 but looking at this census pages it was the 1900 date.

Did you know that Lancelot was in the Army? His Pension record is on Ancestry.

Also, he and Mary Ann Deaves appear to have married twice! Once in 1900 and again in 1902. I would guess that the second marriage was because he hadn't had the Army's permission to marry the first time. It is the second marriage that is recorded on his Army record.

He joined the Army in 1893 and seems to have spent most of his service either in England or Hong Kong.

Here he is in 1891, occupation Engine Fitter, which ties up with him being in the Royal Engineers:

Name: Launcelot G Burd
Age: 17
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relationship: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Burnhaven, Abdnshire
Registration Number: 168/1
Registration district: St Nicholas
Civil Parish: Aberdeen St Nicholas
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: 26 Urquhart Rd
Occupation: Engine - Fitter

Is there a ny record of Lancelot in 1891?- I pick him up as marrying in England in 1900.
