Bert can be short for a number of names beside being a name in is own right. The marriage cert would at least have his age and probably fathers details.

Is Bert his proper name or is is Albert, Herbert, Hubert etc?

It might be a good idea to get the marriage certificate to see who his father was and work back from there.

His age should be on the marriage certificate along with his father's name and occupation.
