Philip, do you know his parent's names at all? - Just with Smith being a not unusual name!

How did you arrive at him - is he a direct ancestor?

Philip Report 9 Nov 2010 14:22

many thanks for your help, Unfortunately no Middle name, my grandmother was born 9th Jun 1907 Darlaston, her father an Iron Planer Albert Smith - married to Ann Maria Etchells of Darlaston Staffs, unfortunately I do not think any legal marrige occured, nothing on IGI, St Catherines, BMD or overseas for them, on his death cert in 1956 4th March Hallam Hospital West Brom he is listed as 82 and on 1911 census is living with children and Ann Maria at 42 Addision street/ Terrace Wednesbury listed as being 37 years old, was told he was born around March or April,
Have applied to Staffs Achives for Hallam Hosp Administration books that start in 1955 as im hoping it has his dob on there!, no mention of his parents unfortunately, know he had two fingers on right hand due to industrial accident in the 1900's but on 1911 disabilities are redacted - don't think it would fall under this column anyway :(.

Just wanted to say a big thankyou for taking the time to look into this, if any one can help in any way?

Was also toying with idea of bigamy as he never as far as I can tell married Ann Maria although 1911 states he has been married for 4 years and my grandma being born in 1907.
other children he had,
Phyllis Mabel 1908
John Roland 1910
Frederick Leslie 1912
William Ernest 1914
Marie Gertrude Theresa 1916
Albert Hector 1917

His occupations vary far and wide!
Iron Planer, tool setter , commercial traveller, hardware shop, watchman, gas tube drawer do not believe he was in great war, as listed as munitons worker on the 1916 birth cert.
Unfortunately his parents were never mentioned to anyone now still living!

Re all the above information, I unfortunately don't know if he had siblings or the name of his parents so it could be a case of guess work, the only way I think I might find a certificate is if I get an exact date of birth for him and do a GRO Birth Search and pay the £11.50 (if it still is that amount) for them to search the exact date.

update - Staffs archives have his entry in the hospital records when he entered and died there in 1956 but only gives age in years , could anyone else suggest where I might be able to find an exact date of birth from?

"ShirleyI,m getting the hang of it " where is Chipping Norton would this match up with the 1911 census that catherine kindly posted?

Many thanks again everyone!
