Find Ancestors

I have found a birth of an ancester. Is there any way I can find his parents names.
He is ALBERT EDWARD HUMPHREY born A/M/J 1872 registered St Ives.
I can't find the 1881 for him. I have the 1891 when he is shown as 20 and working as a groom.

His birth certificate will give you his parents names and his mother's maiden name.

I don't have his birth cert. I found a birth on freebmd for june 1872. I think I have found the info if someone would check to see if I am correct. I have found this on family search.

Are you sure that one is yours as there are about 4 others born 1872.

Unless you buy a copy of the birth cert. you will never be absolutely sure if you have the correct census, unless you know if he had any siblings, or have any other clues!
St. Ives is the Reg.Dist. for his birth, but where does he give as place of birth on the 1891 census that you have?

It would help to know what you *do* know -- the reason why you're tracing him.

Do you know whom he married? His marriage certificate would give his age and his father's name, and you can trace back with that.

If one doesn't have certificates, one has to get them! ;)

The 1891 census I have shows him as 20 and living at Connington and born at Hemingford. These are in the same area and not far from St Ives. I live in this area so know theres not far between them all.

Janey, I am trying to keep up with all the responses and my fingers can't go any faster, sorry.

The birth in St Ives is probably correct as it is about 25 miles from here.

Albert is my husband 3 X gr grandad. The reason I am trying to find out this info is that I have recently found that my mum in law has a half sister that neither knew about. They live less than a mile apart and the sister knows nothing of where she came from as she was raised by her dads sister after her mother walked out when she was only one year old.
The sisters are now in regular contact and I have offered to find out some info for her as she knew absolutely nothing.

If you are certain that he married Janet Allen, then you really need to start by buying a copy of the cert. This will confirm, or not, if you have the correct father. If not then we can look again at the census records to see if we can find the correct one.
It will also give you his address at the time he married which could help and his occupation which could also confirm any findings.

Cheryl, it's just that if you start out by giving the info you actually have -- in particular, the marriage to Janet Allen, in this case -- people don't waste time on guesses and wild goose chases.

Once I guessed at the marriage, which turned out to be correct, it was possible to find him in 1901 and then track him back using the info in that census.
