Hi Madmeg
Thought I would let you know, I have the death cert for the Thomas Swanwick who died 1854 - his age at death was 52 at shelford, his occupation was Husbandman (some sort of farm worker) the person present at his death was Ann Swanwick - my Thomas was married to Harriet and their daughters were Jane, Martha and Mary, so I do think Thomas who died in the workhouse 1870 is more than likely the correct one, If I can find more on Harriets death this may cast a bit more light on it,

I think many of us had relatives who died in the Workhouse. It's not till you start researching different branches of your tree that you realise just how common it was to be in the workhouse, have an illegitimate child, live with someone as man and wife without being married etc. etc.

Certainly family stories are not to be ignored, but they often got the facts slightly wrong - so it would still need investigating.

Good luck.

yes I did mean the age was correct and yes I will get that cert, if its worth doing and all that,
the other thing was my granddparents did once say they had had family die in the workhouse, I was a kid at the time so who it was I dont know, don't you just want to kick youself for not being interested at the time

Hi Paul

By "the dob is correct" you must mean he was the right age, cos the death cert wouldn't give a dob.

I'd be sorely tempted to get the death cert of the Thomas who died in 1854. I take your point that he wasn't described as deceased on the marriage of John, but as you say there is no guarantee that he wasn't either.

I'd order it from the local register office, and specifiy that you expect him to be about 46, and the death to have been registered by his wife, or a child, and give any other information you have got. They will probably then ring you up to get any other information to ensure they are issuing the correct certificate. No guarantees, but if I were you, I'd have to have a try. They won't charge if they don't get a match.

The 1870 death has not a lot to make me sure it is the right man.

well as sure as I can be -the dob is correct, he was a frame work knitter and lived in that area he was also born in Keyworth that also matches with the workhouse records of 1861 - I do not see any other thomas swanwicks that anyway near match - it would seem he and his wife Harriet were both on the 1851 census together - I also have the wedding cert of his son John in 1857 it dosn't show Thomas as deceased at that time, I know this is not necessarily that he hadn't died but on other certs of the time it usualy would say so, so I think the 1854 death is wrong, many many thanks for taking time for me-- sorry I took so long to reply -its shift work to blame
