Thank you

Janice

Janice Report 21 Oct 2010 23:29

Canning Town and Bromley-by-Bow aren't that far apart, so the one born there is a possible suspect.

Janice

Janice Report 21 Oct 2010 23:30

What do you think of this one?

Henry South

Estimated Birth Date: abt 1884
Baptism Date: 5 Jun 1884

Parish or Poor Law Union: Bow Common St Paul

Thomas is a labourer.

That could be the one Janice ,Just seemed a bit odd that he would lie about his age , but he was marrying a younger lady so perhaps it was worth the fib .

Janice

Janice Report 21 Oct 2010 23:36

1881 census:

This could be the family that goes with that baptism:

Name: Catherine South
Age: 31
Estimated birth year: abt 1850
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: Thomas South
Where born: Stepney, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Bromley St Leonard
County/Island: London
Street address: 20 Eastward St
Registration district: Poplar
Sub-registration district: Bromley

Thomas South 32
Catherine South 31
Catherine South 10
George South 8
Ann South 6
Edward South 4

Lying on certs isn't odd at all!! It's actually more common than you think lol.

Death certs are quite often wrong as it relies completely on the informant.

Joy

Joy Report 21 Oct 2010 23:38

That birth registration looks accurate enough for me going by the age when he married. A death certificate is only as accurate as the knowledge of the informant.

My grandfather said he was 29 when he was 32 grandmother was 20 so maybe that was why

I shouldn't add something so speculative if I were you.

I'd order the Poplar birth cert

Births Dec 1881
SOUTH Henry Poplar 1c 635

and specify father's name as Thomas. That way you'll definitely know.

Barbara

Barbara Report 21 Oct 2010 23:47

I'll do that Janice , your a star ,
Thank you once again

In 1891 there is a Henry South, age 8, nephew of Charles and Ellen Simpson, at 28, Box Street, Bromley, London.
- thinking of the one baptised 5 Jun 1884.
