Hi All,
I think I may have tried this one before but here goes again. I've hit a brick wall with my gr grandfather John Soreb Clark. The first confirmed record I have for him is 1861 when he married his first wife, Susannah Alcock. He does not appear to know who his father is on the marriage cert. 1880 he married my gr gran and gives his father as William, a seaman. Does anyone out there have this man on their tree? He was in the navy and gave his birth place as Portsea Portsmouth.
Regards,
Pam

To Gael down under,
Thanks for the info about Thomas's children. I wondered why I was not able to find him after the 1881 census. He must have joined the army. I will check out the name of his mum . I can look in the local records in Portsmouth.
Thanks,
Pam
PS the name William appears in two of John Soreb's childrens names so my guess is that William was his father.

Hi Pamela,

The only Johns I can find born in Portsea with William as father were ranging from 1820 to 1823

Gael

Gael Report 26 Sep 2010 08:55

There must have been a Soreb somewhere in your family and that name seems to have originated from Denmark

Pamela

Pamela Report 26 Sep 2010 09:06

Gael down under
That's very interesting about the name Soreb being Danish. John Soreb Clark was in the navy and I have sometime's wondered if he added the name to himself just to be different from other John Clarks. I thought it might be his mothers maiden name.
I have found a William and Elizabeth who had a son Alfred GRAYSON Clark in 1830 . Taking into account dates, this could be John's brother. If there was a family trait for giving boys unusual names it might be why Thomas William was also called Alison. But as I have said I have hit a brick wall with no defining records to get back to the prevous generation.
Regards,
Pam from Portsmouth England

Could John have married a few times ???

When did he join the Navy ?

Pamela

Pamela Report 26 Sep 2010 09:18

That's John with his second wife Martha, my gr gran. Thomas William is still at home with them. My old gr grand lost no time in getting married again and my grandad was his last child.

Pamela

Pamela Report 26 Sep 2010 09:25

To Gael,
I don't know when he joined the navy. Most of my problems are to do with having no concrete records about him before his first marriage in 1861 to Susannah. I have a copy of their original marriage cert. I have a copy of his marriage cert. in 1880 when he married my gr gran I have copies of the 1861 1871 8181 census, but nothing about him before these dates. I sometime wonder if he sailed into Portsmouth married Susannah and settled down. He was 30 then and I wonder if he had a family somewhere else.

Gael Report 26 Sep 2010 09:26

There's a John William Clarke born to William and Elizabeth in 1825 in Portsea.

Pamela

Pamela Report 26 Sep 2010 09:47

Looked on igi to check that out and it's John and Elizabeth Clarke had john William Clarke..........but that may be a good lead. Maybe that is parents.
What I have been looking at is the 1861 census; John and Susannah were living in Hope Street with Elizabeth 19 recorded as a niece, who's name is Clark. But that's a dead-end so far. I was hoping to find her birth record that would give her fathers name and a brother of John's, maybe!
