Find Ancestors

I am trying to find the marriage of my g grandparents Joseph Prior (born 1868, Bow, London) and Harriett Mannall (born 1867 Charsfield, Suffolk).
The most likely dates are 1888-1891 for the marriage, and the most likely place is West London. In 1891 they are living in Kensington, but over the next few years they move address at least once per year from Kensington to Willesden, Kilburn, Hampstead... so where they were living when they were married is anyone's guess.
I am hoping that they were married, as there is no entry for this marriage in the National Indices.

Unfortunately Joseph died in 1902.

I have Joseph on the 1891 census and the family together in 1901.
I have several of the children's birth cerificates starting with Elizabeth Beatrice Prior 19 oct 1890.
Father given as Joseph Prior and mother as Harriett Prior nee Mannall, but were they really married?

I had the same problem with two ancestors and sent for the birth cert. of one of their children. The birth was registered in the husband's surname and gave the mother's maiden name - but they did not marry until a few years later (they both committed bigamy a few years later)

Thanks for all the information. This one is quite complex and I'm afraid I had tried to simplify it. I know all of Harriett Mannal's details including her family background up to 1881.
In the late 1880's she either does (or does not) marry my great grandfather Joseph Prior - and I am definite that the name is Joseph.
He definitely dies in 1902, and she then either does (or does not) marry Stephen Lawrence (can't find a certificate for that one, either) and has at least one child with him. The other children on the 1911 census are his children by a previous marriage.
Without a marriage I can't find Joseph Prior's father (there are too many possible candidates).
I've been banging my head on this one for six years...

Perhaps Joseph is Robert Prior's brother !!

No, scrub that, the dates are wrong way round.
The Robert Prior marriage is later than the Lawrence one.

thanks for that info. I'm glad to see she got married at least once. Still, if her daughter with Stephen was nine at the time she is obviously in no hurry. And I'm afraid that it still doesn't prove that she ever married Joseph Prior.

One other curiosity is the entry on the 1891 census - there is a child referred to as "Stornley" which I have looked at and it could be either Stanley or Sidney (the writing is very bad).. Now I can't find a candidate in the indices for this child, and he vanishes by 1901, with no apparent death certificate either.

Harriett does not give up her secrets easily!

Calling herself Prior when she married Lawrence is not proof that she married Prior...........probably didn't want to own up to so many children being illegitimate

On 1891 image the child 'Stomley' is definitely not Sidney...........it is almost certainly Stanley, born Westminster
