Glad to hear you are getting somewhere Brian. If you DO get Emma's birth certificate come back to the thread and let us know who her mother was.

To kath
thanks again from your help, you i know were right on the money when you gave me the advice to get emma's birth cert. i havent got it yet but via more work i have found lots of info including a match to a family story of relations to the moody family connected to the moody boatyard in southampton.
i know many people think they are related to well known names but many stories guessed because of area and name. but my new tree connections duplicate some old family stories.
thank you for all your help

I think the name is Kinchington. There are a few marriages of that name in the Hampshire area.

You never know Brian - stranger things have happened!! I'd buy Emma's birth certificate and go from there. If Eliza IS Emma's mother then I would start asking lots of questions to your Slade workmate.

Off to bed now - good luck with your research.

This looks like Eliza with her husband and children in the 1901 census. Ancestry has transcribed two families together by mistake. The Bartley's are next door neighbours and not the same family:-

This would seem to be Eliza Moody's marriage (the Eliza born c.1869):-

Name: Eliza Moody
Year of Registration: 1891
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: South Stoneham
County: Hampshire
Volume: 2c
Page: 95

Spouse is William Henry Slade.

I think Eliza could possibly be Emma's mother but you really need Emma's birth certificate to be certain of any of this.

This is a bit complicated. Eliza Wheeler was previously Eliza Kinchenten (or Kinchington). In the 1881 census here she is:-

1881 England Census about Matilda Moody
Name: Matilda Moody
Age: 7
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relation: Granddaughter
Mother's Name: Eliza Moody
Gender: Female
Where born: Bitterne, Hampshire, England
Civil parish: South Stoneham
County/Island: Hampshire
Country: England
Street Address: Commercial St
Education:

Employment status:

Occupation: Scholar
Registration district: South Stoneham
Sub-registration district: South Stoneham
ED, institution, or vessel: 3

Household Members:
Name Age

Eliza Kinchenten 62
Eliza Moody 37, daughter, widow
Eliza Moody 12, granddaughter
Matilda Moody 7, granddaughter
Henry Sharp 19, lodger.

I wonder if Emma was Eliza's daughter (the 12 year old Eliza)

Not sure now whether Matilda can be Emma's mother as this is Matilda's birth:-

Name: Matilda Ellen Moody
Year of Registration: 1874
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: South Stoneham
County: Hampshire
Volume: 2c
Page: 50

I would say she must be some relation though.

emma and thomas i beleive had a daughter matilda so maybe like i once thought that maybe the mother too.
if her sister inlaw wasn't a moody it would be easier to say matilda was a daughter of her.

On the 1901 census there is a Matilda Powdrill with the Wheelers. She is the Matilda Moody from the 1891 census. This is her marriage:-

Name: Matilda Ellen Moody
Year of Registration: 1893
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: South Stoneham
County: Hampshire
Volume: 2c
Page: 103

On the page is Frederick John Powdrill.

kath you do this so quick and some of this has taken me ages .
i think your right maybe its time to look at her birth certificate and find her parents the nearest i got was a conection to mr wheeler and wifes name then portsmouth under william i think but not sure. s stoneham birth doesn't tie with portsmouth but maybe family in bitterne.
