Thanks to everyone for that. Branston Street rings a bell because I was told when I was very young that Uncle Bob (Robert Sewell) met his wife Ada Dayus when Uncle Alf lived in Branston Street. Ada lived in the back house & Uncle Alf in the front one.
Why didn´t I remember that before???

Wow Vanessa, thanks for finding all that info.

I was a Sewell by marriage, so like Marion was interested in this family. My ex was descended from Alfred's older brother, who had premises in the Jewellery quarter, quite close to Branston Street.
I will now be trying to find out more about Milly/Millie Shaw.

Hi, on the Birmingham Elec roll

Alfred Henry Sewell appears once with Amelia Sewell in 1920

at 1 court 16 Branston street.

He appears at various addresses up and down Branston street and his second wife stayed on the street after his death.

Have tried numerous different searches and cannot locate him in 1912- the first year that the site that I use has for elec roll returns for Birmingham.

Any other ideas and I am happy to help.

best wishes

Vanessa

edit-- have gone through the various Amelias and can pretty much account for them with different partners etc in other years.

Breakthrough !!!!!!

1922- 1 court 16 Branston street --Milly Shaw and Alfred Sewell
1925 /27 - 2 court 6 Branston st---Millie Shaw , Alfred Sewell
1930 -2 court 6 Branston street- Alfred alone.

Hi Tess.
No, don´t have his death cert. Only know when he died because he & Aunt Violet were only married for a year or so & I remember her well. She re married & she & her 2nd husband adopted a daughter who had something wrong healthwise. May have been polio. She spent a lot of time in an orthopaedic hospital in Coleshill. Have no idea where she is now although I believe she was in touch with Dad´s sister Joyce until Joyce died about 6 or7 years ago.
Thanks for looking though. He is certainly elusive, but my gran always used to say he was a bit of a "wide boy"
Hope you are feeling better.
Regards Marion

Hi Marion, have checked 1932 and 1933 to see if I could find a will for him, but wasn't one listed at Birmingham ref. Library.

Also checked on the elec roll at his sister, Flora's address, in the hopen that he might be with her, or living in the same street. No luck there either.

Will there be an address on his death cert.? I can try to check that out on elec. reg. if you have got one.

Thank you all so much for looking.
Tess, I have no idea when Millie died. Uncle Alf died before I was born but I remember Aunt Violet very well. They had been married less than a year when he died & Violet re married & adopted a daughter with her 2nd husband.
Alf was well known for being a bit of a "character", but can´t understand why I can´t find him, having tried all the usual trick such as first name only etc.
The surname is often mis spelled or mis transcribed. I searched for ages to find two of Alf´s sisters in 1911 & by accident, someone else located them transcribed as Summers.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Have you any idea when (Ellen) Amelia / Millie died?

perhaps her place of death or death cert will give us a clue.

Trying from another angle....looked for Amelia Sewell in 1911 in Warks.

Only one of approx age.....married to John Harry

The only Millie was aged about 3..........

Flick

Flick Report 9 Sep 2010 15:37

I'm assuming you have the 1931 marriage cert - and that it refers to him as being widowed (or divorced)?

Flick

Flick Report 9 Sep 2010 15:35

Can't see him in either of the censuses.........could he possibly have been in the Boer war? Would explain 1901, at least.............

Hi Flick.
Thanks for that. Had seen Alfred & Ethel but pretty sure it´s not him. That one is too old & the occupation is wrong. Alf was an electro plater.

Don´t know where I got that from because I can´t find it now.
probably another senior moment. but I know I got it from somewhere.
