My Great grandfather was Daniel Holland born in Sunderland in 1853, his parents were John Holland born in Cork Ireland and I believe Mary Haswell born in Manchester in 1831. I can not find any family for Mary Haswell. can anyone else find anything?

Joh Holland was born abt 1823/6 his father was John Holland born in Cork Ireland 13.1.1784, d 22.5.1866 in Woodford Cheshire, his wife was Catherine Sullivan b Cork Ireland 1789 & d 29.9.1860 in Woodford Cheshire. I would like any further information anyone can give me. When did they marry? did they have any other children? Names of their parents etc.
I would also like any information about Daniels wife Ann McQuinn b Jun 1857 Newcastle upon Tyne, father James b 1825 and mother Elizabeth b 1830 surname unknown. I have no further information about Daniels wife and her family.

Have you got Daniel's birth cert as I think it is vital if you want to know for sure.

If this reg'n is where you're getting Mary Haswell from, it looks as if this John Holland married Esther.

Thank you very much for all your help and Alison, I am going to order Daniel's birth and marriage certificates. Daniel's daughter Beatrice is my grandmother but I never met any of her siblings or other relatives other than my fathers siblings. My aunt told me that the family lived in Easington and South Hetton and that Daniel was born in Sunderland and that my grandmother was the youngest of 13 children. I know my grandmother married my grandfather in Sunderland in 1917 and that's about it as far as her family go. My aunt also told me that Daniels father was Irish. Not a lot to go on really.

Thank you again for all of this its great.

Looking through the information it is all still a bit confusing, nothing much seems clear.

John Holland and his wife Mary were living next door to Daniel and his family in 1881. This John was born in Ireland and his wife's name is Mary born in Manchester (Lancashire), this is why I thought he married Mary Haswell but I have no evidence to support that, I hope Daniel's BM certs will do that.

Thank you both for all your help and effort.

Well Daniel has 12 children covering the 1881/1891/1901 censuses. With Beatrice the youngest in 1901. Have you checked the 1911 to see if one child had died between censuses?

I have ordered the birth and marriage certificate for Daniel Holland, this should shed light on his parents, the other person in his marriage comes up as Ann McQueen.

I will check the census details to see if one child died between them Ozi.

Thank you for everything.

Hi
I have now received the marriage certificate for Daniel Holland, he married Ann McQuinn (not McQueen) on 1 November 1875, his father was John Holland fisherman and his wife's father was Patrick McQuinn rivetter. I think the names differ sometimes as the writing is sometimes difficult to read.

Am I correct that the witnesses to a marriage offer some clues as they are often relatives?

I am waiting for the birth certificate to find the name of Daniel's mother.

I have looked at the census records and can not find anyone missing on them other than when they are working as servants. In 1901 Ellen and Margaret are servants and live with their employers. I can only guess that a baby was born and died between the censuses as I was told Beatrice was the youngest of 13 children. I will search to see if there is a birth and death of a Holland in the area about the right time.

Thank you once again

You will have found that there are nine possibilities with two sets of twins. It is important for you to check the 1911 census where it states the number of children born to a couple, and number still living.

If there is only one missing child you may never know unless you're keen enough to get all the birth certs. You may be lucky to contact a descendant from one of the older children who actually knows the dead child's name.

kin Report 11 Sep 2010 01:11

Hi Ozi
I am not sure I completely understand, how would I know if the family had twins if one died at birth or soon after? How would all the birth certs help, would the cert state that it was twins?

I have never met any of the Holland family other than my grandmother as far as I'm aware. My mother and father lived in Wiltshire where I was raised, we went to visit my grandmother, and my two aunts in South Shields every year but I can't recall meeting any other family members. One of my aunts is in hospital with dementia and the other is not keen on talking about the family history. The one that is not keen on talking about it might be because she was born out of wedlock, her father is not the same father am father's father but they have the same mother. So I don't know how to contact any of the children.

It is a bit costly to order all the Birth certs. Maybe there is a way of finding one of the descendants but I am not sure how.

How will I have found that there are 9 possibilities with two sets of twins?

You are far more knowledgeable at all this than me.

Thank you so much for the information but if possible can you tell me how I find out about the possibility of twins?

So Maureen's solved your problem.

But referring to your questions. You're right, that's the point, unless you bought the certs you wouldn't know, and would you want to go to that expense?
