As you know the lady, how about asking her for a copy of the marriage certificate? :-)
Then you can mutually share information.

If you post on that board, or any other you can find, someone at some time in the future might see it and respond. Always worth a try.

I have read this and I know the lady - she never got any replies from this which made the family think he perhaps didnt come from Clairemorris after all.

When in doubt, put the person's name in google and see what comes up - I tried Bartholomew Banks born Ireland and this appeared:

I am trying to trace my husband's great great grandfather. We think he was born in Claremorris in 1843 . His father was called James Banks. At some stage the family went to live in England and BB married a Catherine Langan.One of his grand daughters was born in claremorris(Ellen Burns)the rest of the 10 children where born in Oldham.I am so excited to have got this far I do hope someone can help.

Synopsis
Compulsory civil registration of non-Roman Catholic marriages began on April 1st, 1845. The registration of births, deaths and all marriages commenced on January 1st, 1864. The General Register Office (GRO), holds copies of all civil records for the whole of Ireland, from the commencement of registration, up to and including the year 1921.

Unfortunately civil registration started later in Ireland than it did in England, that is 1865.

I cannot find a marriage for him in free BMD and do not have access to ancestry site - maybe someone could search there for their marriage.

I cant find him in 1881 but that is him widowed in 1891 yes !!

So in 1881 they are here - New Road, Saddleworth?

And in 1891 he is widowed and here - 2, Greenwood Street, Saddleworth, Springhead, Mossley?
