Looking for information re: ethel Woodrow - married name- whose maiden name was Leggoe as a result of her mother Jane's 2nd marriage but who was born we think Smith in
Todmordan on the Lancashire/Yorkshire.border on 09/06/1909. I know her mother was called Jane and she had two sisters Beatrice and Hilda . I'm pretty sure she was a
Smith so now I would like information re: her natural father. who I know nothing about. Once I have information about him I can begin researching his family on the 1901 census. Hope this is clearer

So, you believe her mother married a Mr. Smith by whom she had Ethel. She then went on to marry a Mr. Leggoe and Ethel took on this surname. Is that it?

You really need to trace her mother's marriage if you can. Have you got Ethel's marriage cert?

Why do you think that she was a Smith? Any approximate dates for her mother's marriages please?

They lived together for many years previous. Not heard of so much back then.

Pamela, you will need to answer the other queries too. Fo you have Ethel's marriage cert and do you know when her sisters were born?
I can't see a jane Smith/Leggoe marriage anywhere. Knowing mr. Leggoe's full name would be a start. But personally I think you need Ethel's marriage cert to have a hope of solving this.

You say Mr. Leggoe was Jane's second husband. Do you know the name of Jane's first husband?

Thanks I'll get it but I'm thinking that she will give details of Mr Leggoe as being her father and not give information about her natural father which is who I'm interested in. Or does it have to be her natural fathers details?.

You are right - she could put Mr.Leggoe and that is perfectly legal. But that might still help you Pamela - there will be other bits of info, addresses and witnesses for example. And we might be able to track him down and through him Ethel's mother. It's the only way I think as Smith is a nightmare to research.

The information on her marriage certificate will be whatever information she gave at the time. It doesn't necessarily have to be accurate. Her birth certificate should give you the correct information. If there is no father on the birth certificate she was probably illegitimate.

Even if it has Mr Leggoes details on it at least that is a starting point for us to be able to help you as at the moment we really have nothing at all to go on.

Just looking back, FBG makes a very good point about her age - she would have been 39 when she married Mr. Woodrow, and a bit old for her first marriage. Another reason to get that cert!
