I'm trying to trace why my Grandfather, Thomas Henry Gatrall, changed his own and the names of his siblings from Gatrall to Garland between the census of 1901 and that of 1911. It was my father, Sidney Thomas Garland, one of Thomas Henry's sons, who registered his children as Gatrall-Garland therby restoring the Gatrall name.
My failing memory recalls that there was a man of the church by the name of Garland who helped the family when living in Nottingham. So goes a story handed down when I was a child.
Who was this priest or person?

What are they listed as in 1911 please?

From the 1901 census, the surname Gatrall seems to be unique to Hampshire. None in Nottingham.

In your tree, Thomas, you have Thomas Gatrall born 1840 Isle of Wight. It doesn't make sense that this would be him ... how would he be changing his siblings' surname 70 years later?

There are no Gatrall-Garland births ever (unless Gatrall appears as middle initial G), and only one marriage, in 1946. No Gatrall-Garland deaths.

Thanks all helpers. Not being familiar with the site I must appear to being rude. Apologies. MarieCeleste has it right. My Grandfather, THOMAS HENRY GATRALL, when living in Uckfield registered his children in the 1901 census as GATRALL. By the time of the 1911 census he had moved the family to Nottingham and in that year registered them as GARLAND, also changing his own first name to Stewart!
My father, Sidney Thomas, re-introduced the Gatrall name by registering his three children (I am Thomas Rex, the youngest) at birth as
GATRALL-GARLAND. He never discussed the family history with us. I do not know why T.H. changed the name from GATRALL to GARLAND.
Does anyone?

Yes, as I suggested: the "Gatrall-Garland" is translated in records as "G. Garland".

If there were any registered events between 1901 and 1911, as Potty suggests, it could place the switch more accurately in time.

Edit: It's interesting how some of the children have switched to their middle names, too. Were they hiding from someone, or fresh start, fresh names?

I notice he's now a journalist. Are there any journalism directories anywhere, or perhaps check with local newspapers of that area? Perhaps his new name made a better byline?

That switch to middle names is interesting, MC, I'd noticed it but then not been properly suspicious. ;)

Nora's birth was the only Gatrall event in Nottinghamshire 1901-1911.

How is Thomas Henry Gatrall / Stewart Garland's death recorded? I'm not finding one that fits.

Have checked out those 3 Garlands that Janey found, plus a few more and none of them were priests. Of course, the priest could have moved elsewhere by the 1911 census.

Thank you all so much. MarieCeleste & Janey have listed correctly. Yes, children not siblings. Have traced birthplace of my father Sidney Thomas in Sandown IOW. Plan visit to Records Office in Newport IOW next year. Yes Stewarts Garland sounds better than T.H.Gatrall but we think he had something to hide! I'm too old now to visit Nottingham where the answer probably lies.
