Find Ancestors

Can anyone suggest a site where I might find my father's birth record in N.Ireland.

I don't find the site in general very easy to use. Even though I am a beginner and got some results I haven't even been able to find any record of his death and that was in the U.K.!!

Post his name and someone will find his death

My father's name was John Joseph McCloskey, born I think in Claudy Londonderry. In I think 1910, 4th November . Thanks so much.

Now I have to wait for my parents marriage certificate to arrive to make sure this actually is my father. Some of the names don't ring bells.

I'm intrigued by the census details, but will have to wait for more details as already mentioned. My puzzlement is the fact that I thought my father was the youngest brother and he definitely had a brother called Edward. Still your info was so interesting I hope I've got my facts wrong! Could save me a lot of research.

You forced me to use my brain for a change.

I remembered I had written to one of my father's sisters years ago namely one Agnes McCloskey. I have just had a rifle in the attic and found the letters. It's over 23 years ago so I couldn't remember a great deal. She gives me details of my father's family and it sounds as though you got it right. I am so grateful to you.

I have not long recovered from an illness hence the rambling. It could be the Irish ancestry though!!

Cannot find a birth for Patrick.
Did Edward die as a baby, there is a birth for an Edward in 1907, but do not see a death.
Family say that they had 5 children, 4 still living and there is a gap between Patrick c1906 and Agnes 1908

Thank you so much for the info

I have discovered that an Edward was born after my father so perhaps he was named for the child that died. I'm really not sure but that sounds the most obvious explanation. Patrick is on the census (1911) has having been born after James Peter, it looks as though there is a year between them. My aunt seems to confirm that Patrick was the second child.

After my father there was Edward and then Jane. I'm not sure in which order though.

I have obviously got loads to do. I have been trolling through the Irish records trying to find my grandmother's maiden name. I'll keep going since I'm learning a lot, but it's only guess work until my parent's marriage cert arrives. I found three Sarah's of the right age so far.

Will check that again later as have no biro to write it down and have to go out for awhile.
Mothers maiden name on books afte 1903 but it is not on site.

Thanks again for your help. Could you advise I'm tempted to join emeraldancestors.com but after I tried their freebe for a marriage, which was only a civil I got cold feet, because the only one I could find for Sarah and James McCloskey was in 1912 and I'm fairly sure they were already married by then despite the myth of our ancestors 'purity'!

Would I expect to find a record of a marriage in parish records? I have tracked down 4 Sarahs who could be candidates one living very near to my grandfather who seems likely being a farmer's daughter although she is Presbyterian I know people weren't as fussy as we thought about interfaith marriages. Better not ramble on any more.

I don,t think that they were as fussy either Maureen, i have found a few of mine interfaith too but family now won,t talk about it and they have down on censi as Catholic.
